Abstract

The speed of asynchronous serial communications is detected by determining a duration of a data bit within an asynchronous data stream. The duration of the data bit is used to generate a clock frequency. The clock frequency is used to clock data from the asynchronous data stream into a register. The clocked data is processed according to an error indication.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to data communication, and more particularly to asynchronous serial communication. Background of the invention [0002] Asynchronous serial data communication systems are known in which data terminal equipment (DTE) asynchronously transmits / receives serial data to / from data communication equipment (DCE) at varying baud rates. The baud rate indicates the rate at which data is communicated between the DTE and DCE (that is, bits per second or bps). For example, the DTE can send / receive data to / from the DCE at rates ranging between approximately 300 bps to 115,200 bps. However, before any communication starts, DTE and DCE are required to work at the same baud rate. The autobaud command can be used to equalize the baud rates used by DTE and DCE. [0003] Figure 1 shows a system utilizing asynchronous serial data communication according to the prior art. DTE100 is data terminal equipment such as ASCII terminal or personal...
