Embodiment Construction

[0015] It is known in the prior art that compressed air, for example for the pneumatic braking system of a road vehicle, typically a truck or a bus, must be dried before use. This can be achieved by installing an air dryer in the system between the air compressor and the gas consumer or dry air storage tank.

[0016] The air to be dried is sent from the compressor through the desiccant (possibly one or more filters) in the air dryer. After a period of use the desiccant becomes damp and must be regenerated or dried to continue its drying performance. This regeneration is accomplished with dry air from the system. The present invention is concerned with the control of this regeneration.

[0017] In the figure a single chamber air dryer SD is briefly depicted. The compressed air system in which this air dryer is installed is conventional and not described further. The regeneration of the air dryer SD is controlled by an on-board computing unit ECU placed above the two solenoi...

Abstract

For a single chamber air drier (SD) in a compressed air system on a vehicle the volume of dry regeneration air required to regenerate a desiccant in the air drier has to be determined. This can be accomplished in that data regarding system pressure (p), outdoor temperature (T) and supplied air volume are continuously provided to a computer (ECU), which in relation to these parameters controls the supply of regeneration air to the air drier.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for single chamber air drying in compressed air systems which can be used to determine the volume of dry regeneration air required to regenerate the desiccant in the air dryer. Background technique [0002] A compressed air system for a vehicle, typically a truck or bus, usually includes an air dryer to remove moisture from the air, since moisture can be detrimental to air-using devices in the vehicle such as brakes, air suspension and door openers. [0003] The amount of air supplied to the compressed air system varies depending on the driving conditions and the type of vehicle. [0004] Climatic conditions also vary significantly so that moisture in the air directly affects the air dryer. [0005] Also, the compressed air is often contaminated with lubricating oil in the compressor, some of which gets mixed into the airflow into the compressed air system and gradually degrades the quality of th...
