Also, the excess power provided by the drive is not used by the write head, but dissipated as heat
[0010] From the above discussion, it is clear that these techniques cannot minimize the overshoot characteristic of the write signal without imposing unnecessary load on the write drive circuit.

Embodiment Construction

[0022] Figure 4 is the equivalent circuit diagram 300 of the write drive head and cable with the transient response current damping circuit 12 of the present invention. The transient response damping circuit 12 mainly consists of a resistive load R D Series capacitive load C D . As shown in the figure, the load is connected in parallel with the equivalent circuit 10 of the write head / cable. Preferably choose R D , such that the write signal V is minimized or eliminated during the transient response S transient response overshoot. C D During steady state (or write data) put R D decoupling, thereby avoiding adding unnecessary load to the write drive circuit 10 during data writing.

[0023] When the supply voltage switches from a low state to V S , the current I c will flow through the damping capacitor C D to charge this capacitor and flow through the damping resistor R D , so like referring to image 3 The overshoot is suppressed as described. Those skilled in th...

Abstract

A write head circuit is provided having improved transient and steady state response. The circuit includes a dynamically coupled damping circuit that is coupled to the write head during transient periods of a write signal to substantially reduce or eliminate overshoot generated by a write head cable. During steady state or data writing periods, the damping circuit is decoupled from the write head to prevent unnecessary loading of the write head. In preferred embodiments, the damping circuit includes a resistor in series with a capacitor, and the damping circuit is coupled in parallel to the write head. The resistor substantially reduces the overshoot of a write signal supplied to the write head, while the capacitor decouples the resistor from the write head during steady state or data write periods.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a write head current damping circuit and method with dynamic coupling. In particular, the present invention relates to write head current damping circuits and methods that minimize high frequency ringing in write drive circuits, thereby minimizing transients while maintaining the maximum write current driving the write head. Current overshoot during response is minimized. Background technique [0002] A tape product's write driver circuit is typically used to write data to the tape. figure 1 is a circuit diagram of a conventional write head / cable circuit 100. The write head / cable load 10 consists of an inductive / capacitive (reactive) load and several resistive loads. To write data to the tape, an alternating polarity DC current I s drive the write head. Data is written to the tape by setting multiple fields on the tape by reversing the polarity of the load current. exist figure 1 In the embodiment, the data signa...
