Problems solved by technology

Furthermore, generating a high-frequency AC drive field across the gap in a ring-magnetized device requires considerable power, especially as thermal drift in the detection electrons may occur immediately after the device is excited for the first time.
The high power requirements of the AC drive field place a limit on the operating time of this system on battery power
Finally, AC drives in magnets and coils may generate RF emissions that should be avoided

Embodiment Construction

[0035] Referring now to the drawings, and in particular to FIG. 1 , there is shown an apparatus 10 configured in accordance with the present invention. As shown, the permanent magnet assembly 11 has an E-shaped configuration, forming a gap 12 between the middle column portions 13 and 14 . The magnet consists of magnet elements 11a and 11b and pole pieces 11c and 11d. The Hall sensors 15 and 16 are mounted on a surface 17 which is conceivably a flexible printed circuit board which provides all that is needed between the Hall sensors and the circuitry connecting them via wires in the tail 18 external connection.

[0036] Sample 21 is placed in a defined pattern (typically 1 mm x 2 mm) on substrate 22 and moved into gap 12 via Hall sensors 15 and 16 to provide input from Figure 4 The output signal of the circuit shown is, for example, as discussed in detail below. right behind Figure 7 with Figure 8 More details of the motion and the sensor output will be clarified in the ...

Abstract

Apparatus for detection and measurement of agglutinations of magnetic particles employing Hall sensors (15, 16). A low frequency AC signal (24) is employed to excite or bias the Hall sensors which reside in a DC magnetic field (23). The particles are moved into operative relationship with the Hall sensors in order to generate a signal representing the number of particles on the substrate (22). The method for such detection and measurement is also part of the invention.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to detecting the presence of magnetic particles, and more particularly to quantitatively measuring the accumulation of such particles by DC magnetic excitation and detecting the magnitude of the resultant excitation of the particle's magnetic moment. Background technique [0002] Much attention has been paid to techniques for determining the presence and concentration levels of fine particles in larger mixtures or solutions in which particles are present. In some circumstances it is desirable to measure very low concentrations of certain organic compounds. For example, in medicine, it is very useful to determine the concentration of a given type of molecule, usually in solution, or naturally present in a physiological fluid (such as blood or urine), or has been introduced into a biological system ( such as drugs or pollutants). [0003] A widely used method for detecting the presence of a mixture of particles o...
