Problems solved by technology

A TV with an upconverted interlaced 60Hz or higher vertical refresh rate output (less than 100Hz) from a 50Hz input PAL signal will have a much lower scan rate than a 100Hz vertical refresh rate TV

Embodiment Construction

[0026] Preferred embodiments of the present invention are illustrated in the drawings, like reference numerals referring to like parts throughout the various drawings.

[0027] Various embodiments of the present invention include systems and methods for frame rate upconversion of edge adaptive signals that can be used to generate 60 Hz or higher vertical refresh rate output from standard PAL 50 Hz interlaced input signals. For example, some embodiments of the present invention may be used to convert a PAL 50 Hz interlaced input signal to a 60 Hz or 75 Hz vertical refresh rate output signal comparable in quality to a 100 Hz upconverted output signal known in the art. However, the embodiments of the present invention can be realized by using the same scanning circuit and picture tube as the current PAL television system, and as a result, compared with the prior art 100Hz television system, the cost is greatly reduced.

Abstract

The invention relates to a method and a system for edge-adaptive frame rate up-conversion. One embodiment of the system of the invention comprises a capture block; a frame buffer; an edge-adaptive interpolator; a motion detector; a blender for receiving a prior input field signal from the frame buffer, an interpolated field signal from the edge-adaptive interpolator, and a motion signal, and generating an edge and motion-interpolated field signal; a synchronization control block for processing an input vertical synchronization signal received from the capture block and generating an output synchronization signal and an output field parity signal; a comparator for receiving and comparing the output field parity signal and an input field parity signal output from the capture block; and a multiplexer for selecting, based on the output of the comparator, and providing as an up-converted output signal, either one of the set of current input field signals output from the frame buffer or the edge and motion-interpolated field signal.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of displays, in particular to the field of video signal processing, and more specifically, the present invention relates to a method and system for up-converting frame frequency of motion and edge adaptive signals. Background technique [0002] Conventional display monitors provide video images in rapid sequences of high frequency changing video fields to create motion effects. Television cameras and other video sources generally do not produce full-frame pictures, but instead video sources produce a field consisting of about half the lines of each full-frame picture at a rate of, for example, 60 fields (in an interlaced system). Alternate fields contain alternate lines of video data. That is, one field contains odd lines and the next field contains even lines. Thus, each field of a video image can be classified as an "odd" field or an "even" field. [0003] In a typical interlaced system, the sequence of ...
