[0014] The present invention provides a method and system to monitor and control groundwater treatment pumping and treatment operations. Specific units of the system may include sensors to detect contaminants in groundwater such as chlorinated solvents in the dissolution phase, hydrocarbons, metals, LNAPL and DNAPL. A flow through unit may be provided to accommodate the sensor and expose the sensor to ground water. Also included are transceivers that transmit data signals from the sensors to collectors such as data collection stations (via modem, radio communication or satellite), data transmission systems and collectors including data processing and report formatting sites.

Abstract

A contaminated aqueous composition is withdrawn from a groundwater extraction well (6) and the groundwater is treated in a pump and treat system (5, 9) to remove a contaminant. The treating of the aqueous composition is monitored from a location remote from the groundwater extraction well (6) and the treating is adjusted to remove a contaminant in accordance with the monitoring. A system (5, 9) to treat a contaminated aqueous composition comprises a capture zone to intercept a contaminated aqueous composition and a surface pump and treat system to receive and treat the contaminated aqueous composition form the capture zone. The system also includes a sensor that senses a contaminant in the contaminated aqueous composition and a monitor (55) to receive information concerning the contaminant form the sensor and to consequently control the pump and treat system to treat the contaminated aqueous composition. The monitor (55) is situated at a location remote from the pump and treat system (5, 9).

In particular, the invention relates to remote monitoring of pumping and treatment methods at treatment sites. Background technique [0002] Contaminants from pollution sources can contact groundwater aquifers, creating groundwater pollution flows. The flow may migrate in the direction of groundwater flow. A pump and treat method may be used to provide treatment of an aquifer containing a polluted stream. The pumping and treatment method works by intercepting groundwater at an interception zone, pumping groundwater from the interception zone to the surface, removing contaminants at a surface treatment unit, and then either refilling the treated water back into the ground, or discharging it to a surface water body or municipal sewage treatment plant.
