Embodiment Construction

[0030] exist figure 1 One embodiment of the energy harvesting device 10 of the present invention in an example industrial process is shown in . The energy harvesting device 10 includes an instrumentation assembly 12 mounted inside a drum 14 . A radiation source 16 (such as a UV lamp or a radiation emitter) is provided adjacent to the drum 14 . A continuously flowing web 18 , such as a paper, polymer, fabric, or metal based material, advances in a direction 20 past the radiation source 16 . Guide rollers 22 may be used to guide the web 18 onto the drum 14 . As web 18 passes between radiation source 16 and cylinder 14 , web 18 (which is hereafter assumed to include any adhesive or other layers applied to the base material) is cured by the radiant energy emitted from radiation source 16 . Energy harvesting device 10 may collect radiant energy directed to web 18 in real time. The web 18 is arranged between the cylinder 14 and the radiation source 16 .

Abstract

The invention includes a method for collecting radiation. An electromechanical radiation collection device is disposed in a roll to collect radiation directed at the roll. The invention is also an apparatus comprising a roll having an outer surface. An electromechanical radiation collection device is disposed in the roll.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The invention is a radiation energy collection device. More specifically, the invention is a drum-based radiant energy collection device and measurement device for use in production lines. [0002] Processing systems using radiant energy sources are known in many industrial processes. One exemplary processing system uses ultraviolet (UV) lamps or UV bulbs, positioned near products on the production line, to generate chemical reactions in or on the products. Usually this chemical reaction is called curing (or drying in some industries). UV lamps radiate energy at wavelengths in the visible and non-visible spectrum, both of which have been found to effectively deliver energy to the product to cause the desired chemical change. [0003] Typical wavelengths of energy radiated onto the product range from about 2.5 microns to about 190 nanometers. The product handled by the system can be almost anything, but is typically a web of paper, plastic...
