Problems solved by technology

While these pressing needs have been established for some time, it has not been known how to satisfy the long-felt need to prepare hollow fiber membranes from such desired compounds
Furthermore, a disadvantage regarding the existing methods of preparing Halar flat sheet membranes is that they require the use of highly toxic solvents or solvents with very little questionable safety

[0155] Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention

[0156] The TIPS method is described in more detail in PCT AU94 / 00198 (WO 94 / 17204) AU653528, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. The current method for preparing the membranes of the present invention is described here in simplified form.

[0157] In a preferred form of the invention the poly(ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene) is formed in the form of hollow fibers. Poly(ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene) is dissolved in a suitable solvent and passed through an annular coextrusion head.

[0158] With regard to hollow fibers, there are two possible ways of carrying out the process of the invention. One is through a coextrusion head with three concentric channels, as shown in sectional Figure 1b, and the other is through a coextrusion head with four concentric channels, as shown in sectional Figure 1a. The principle is broadly the same in both cases, the difference being the manner in which the quench flu...

Abstract

The present invention discloses a porous polymer ultrafiltration or microporous filtration membrane comprising Halar (poly(ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene)) and related compounds and a preparation method thereof without using toxic solvents. Preferred solvents, coating agents and pore formers are ethyl citrate or triacetin. Membranes may be in the form of hollow fibers or flat sheets, and may include other agents to improve membrane properties such as hydrophilicity / hydrophobicity balance. A leaching agent can also be incorporated into the membrane.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to Halar (ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene copolymer or poly(ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene)) and related membranes for ultrafiltration and microfiltration, especially in the form of hollow fibers, and to methods for preparing said membranes method. Background technique [0002] The following discussion should not be interpreted as common general knowledge in Australia. [0003] Synthetic polymeric membranes are well known in the art of ultrafiltration and microfiltration for various applications including desalination, gas separation, filtration and dialysis. Membrane properties vary with the morphology of the membrane, ie properties such as symmetry, pore shape, pore size, and the chemistry of the polymeric material used to form the membrane. [0004] Different membranes are available for specific separation processes, including microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and reverse osmosis. Microfiltration and ultrafiltrati...
