Embodiment Construction

[0019] An embodiment of the present invention, such as figure 1 (a), figure 1 (b) and figure 2 As shown, the optical system 10 includes a diode pump source 12 and a gain media 14. The gain medium is made of anisotropically absorbing material and its pump light entrance face 16 is cut at an angle such that the absorption of the pump light beam 18 is substantially independent of polarization.

[0020] The gain medium 14 is cut such that the absorption coefficients of the two main polarizations of the pump beam 18 are substantially equal. In this way, changes in the polarization state of the pump beam 18 do not change the way the pump beam 18 is absorbed in the gain medium 14 . Furthermore, if the absorption spectra of the two main polarizations of the pump beam 18 cross within the operating band of the pump source 12, increasing the absorption of one polarization and reducing the absorption of the other polarization, the wavelength shift (wavelength shift) of the The first ...

Abstract

An optical system has a diode pump source, and a gain media made of a material with an anisotropic absorption. The gain media is cut at an angle to produce substantially polarization-independent absorption of a pump beam. An optical coupler is positioned between the diode pump source and the gain media. The optical coupler produces a pump beam that has substantially equal amounts of pump power along any two orthogonal axis that are orthogonal to the pump beam in the gain medium. The wavelength range allowed for the pump source is extended.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to end-pumped solid state lasers and amplifiers, and more particularly to an optical system whose performance is substantially independent of the polarization or wavelength of the pump beam. Background technique [0002] Laser action generally requires laser activation of the material and means of pumping the medium. More important are solid-state lasers, where the gain medium is a solid; usually a crystal or glass doped with laser-activated ions, and this material is optically pumped with light of the appropriate wavelength. [0003] Solid gain media often show a polarization dependence of pump light absorption, which is especially important for polarized pump beams, such as those obtained from other lasers, such as laser diodes. In general, the transmission optics of the pump beam can be simplified if the light entering the crystal is allowed to be unpolarized. Fiber-coupled pumping using long fibers to transmit the pu...
