Abstract

An automatically activated wireless code symbol reading system includes a handheld housing having a manually actuated data transfer switch under automatic communication range dependent control. When a barcode symbol is read, the barcode reader is within the predetermined RF data communication range of the system, and then the symbol characteristic data string generated virtually simultaneously with the manual actuation of the data transfer switch is transmitted to the base station via the wireless RF communication link. If the device is out of communication range, an audible and / or visual indication signal is automatically generated and the packed symbology data string is packed and transferred to the data storage buffer on the barcode reader. Then, when the barcode symbol reader moves within the communication range of the system, the buffered / packaged symbol signature data is automatically transmitted to the base station via the RF-based data communication link.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to improvements in automated laser scanning bar code symbol reading systems wherein laser scanning and bar code symbol reading operations are automatically initiated in response to automatic detection of objects and / or bar code symbols present thereon. Background technique [0002] Barcode symbology has been widely used in many environments, for example, point of sale (POS) in retail stores and supermarkets, inventory management document tracking, and various data control applications. To meet the growing demand for this innovative technology, various types of barcode readers have been developed for transmitting barcode symbols and generating symbol characteristic data for use as input in automatic data processing systems. [0003] In general, prior art handheld bar code symbol readers using laser scanning mechanisms can be divided into two main categories. [0004] The first type of handheld laser bar code symb...
