Embodiment 2

[0030] Example 2 This example describes a variation of the procedure used in Example 1. The procedure used was substantially the same as that of Example 1 except that after washing with water, elution was performed with 50% aqueous methanol, followed by pure methanol. The eluate was dried as described in Example 1.

Embodiment 3

[0032] Example 3 This example describes the separation of a high theobromine content solid formulation from a theobromine rich fraction. Theobromine-rich fraction is obtained in Example 1. The aqueous rinses were collected and reduced to low volume (until cloudiness became evident). A small amount of activated charcoal was added and the mixture was filtered. Pass hot water through the residue, then collect the rinse and add to the filtrate. The solution was reduced to a volume of 100ml and poured into a separatory funnel. The rinse from the rinse beaker and dichloromethane (50ml) were added, the mixture was shaken (3-4 times), allowed to stand, and then the bottom phase was separated (chlorinated solvent). Repeat the steps of adding dichloromethane, shaking, standing, and separation 3 times. The dichloromethane was then removed by drying over sodium sulfate, the latter was removed by filtration, and the theobromine-rich product was obtained by evaporation on a rotary evapo...

Abstract

The invention relates to a process for the extraction of cocoa shells to provide a theobromine-enriched fraction or composition and a polyphenol-enriched fraction or composition.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method for the extraction of cocoa shells to produce a theobromine-rich fraction or composition and a polyphenol-rich fraction or composition. Background technique [0002] Natural polyphenols derived from plants or plant materials (such as tea, cocoa beans, etc.) are known to have antioxidant properties and provide other potential health benefits. Accordingly, a great deal of research has been conducted in recent years on methods of obtaining these polyphenols, including cocoa polyphenols, and methods of using them. [0003] US Patent No. 5,554,645 (September 10, 1996) proposed a method for extracting polyphenols from shelled, degreased, freeze-dried cocoa powder, which used a solvent of 70:30 acetone:water. The extract is then purified by gel permeation chromatography or high-speed liquid chromatography to obtain polyphenols consisting essentially of oligomers of 3-12.
