Embodiment 1

[0066] At different temperatures and concentrations (weight percentage, weight %), the solubility test was performed on HFC-134a and TP3860. Refrigerant samples were mixed with dye and then the temperature was lowered until a precipitate formed (ppt). The results are shown in Table 2.

Embodiment 2

[0071] A solubility test was performed to compare the solubility of TP3860 dye in both CFC-12 and HFC-152a (1,1-difluoroethane). In addition, the solubility of the dye in HFC-152a with a solubilizing agent, dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether (DMM), was also determined. The two cryogens were mixed with the TP3860 dye concentrate at different concentrations (concentrations are given in weight percent, wt %) and placed in a freezer at a controlled temperature of -26°C for about 4 days. The results are given in Table 3.

Embodiment 3

[0076] Solubility tests were performed on mixtures of HFC-32 and TP3860 dyes at -24°C. In addition, HFC-32 was first mixed with solubilizer n-butane, and then the solubility was measured at -24°C. The results are given in Table 4.

[0077] concentration of dye

[0078] The results showed that while the UV dye was insoluble in HFC-32 alone at all three concentrations tested, solubility was obtained at concentrations of 0.1 wt% and 0.2 wt% with the addition of the solubilizing agent n-butane.

Abstract

The present invention relates to refrigerant compositions comprising refrigerant, UV fluorescent dye and solubilizing agent that enable introduction of leak detectant UV fluorescent dye as solution of dye in refrigerant. Further, the present invention relates to methods for introducing dye, methods for solubilizing dye, methods for detecting leaks and methods for producing refrigeration and heat using the compositions described herein.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application 60 / 519,791, filed November 13,2003. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a refrigerant composition comprising a refrigerant, an ultraviolet (UV) fluorescent dye and a solubilizer which makes it possible to introduce a leak detection agent ultraviolet fluorescent dye as a solution of the dye in the refrigerant. Additionally, the composition may contain lubricants. In addition, the present invention relates to methods of incorporating dyes, methods of solubilizing dyes, methods of detecting leaks, and methods of refrigeration and heating using the compositions described herein. Background technique [0004] Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants have been adopted by the refrigeration and air conditioning industry as a replacement for chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) and hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerants (which have been found to be detri...
