Embodiment Construction

[0026] As shown in the drawings, the invention is embodied as a calibration power supply including thermoelectric capacitors. The power supply provides a calibrated output voltage with a maximum power capability proportional to crystal size. Depending on the type of thermoelectric material used in a thermoelectric capacitor, voltages between 20 and 200 volts can be generated from low voltages (eg, 3-10 volts) with temperature rises in the range of 1-5°C. The small size and simplicity of the design and the high voltage range allow this power supply to be integrated in an integrated circuit.

[0027] refer to figure 1 The power supply 10 includes a thermoelectric capacitor 12 comprising first and second metal plates 14 and 16 and a dielectric 18 between the plates 14 and 16 . Dielectric 18 is made of a thermoelectric material that includes intrinsic temperature-dependent polarization. The polarization is temperature-dependent, and a change in temperature will cause a change i...

Abstract

A calibration power supply includes a thermoelectric capacitor, a heat dissipation element in heat exchange with the thermoelectric capacitance; and a feedback circuit that sends electrical pulses to the heat dissipation element and adjusts the pulses to calibrate the output of the calibration power supply. Another calibration power supply includes: a thermoelectric capacitor; means for sending a heat pulse to the thermoelectric capacitor; means for comparing the voltage of the thermoelectric capacitor to a reference voltage; and means for adjusting the heat pulse based on the comparison. These power supplies can be integrated in integrated circuits. A method of using a thermoelectric capacitor as a calibration power source, the method comprising: sending a thermal pulse to the thermoelectric capacitor; comparing the capacitor voltage to a reference voltage; and adjusting the thermal pulse based on the comparison.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to power supplies. More specifically, the present invention relates to a calibration power supply that can be integrated into an integrated circuit. Background technique [0002] Miniaturization and integration are the development trend of integrated circuits. Semiconductor manufacturing techniques are used to produce integrated circuits with millions of transistors on a single chip. The number of transistors increases with each passing year. [0003] However, high voltage power supplies used in integrated circuits are difficult to miniaturize. Conventional magnetic transformers are too large because they cannot be scaled down for integration in integrated circuits. Voltage doublers are also too large because they typically require too many stages to generate a high voltage (eg, 100 volts) from a low voltage (eg, 5 volts). Piezoelectric transformers are capable of generating enhanced voltages on the millimet...
