Problems solved by technology

However, this additional holdup capacitor adds cost to the radiotelephone and takes up circuit board real estate, which defeats the design goals of reducing the cost and size of the radiotelephone
Also, the prior art does not address the problem of long settling times for amplifiers with narrow bandwidth filters

Embodiment Construction

[0026] FIG. 1 is a block diagram illustrating an example of a radio frequency receiver 10 . Although the illustrated receiver is intended for use in a TDMA digital telephone, the invention is not limited to use in a TDMA receiver or radiotelephone.

[0027] The example radio frequency receiver 10 illustrated in FIG. 1 includes an antenna 12 coupled to an RF amplifier 14 . RF amplifier 14 may be a variable gain amplifier as shown. The control signal may control the gain of RF amplifier 14 or disable the output of RF amplifier 14 . The output of RF amplifier 14 is coupled to mixer 16 . A local oscillator 18 is also coupled to mixer 16 . Mixer 16 outputs an in-phase (I) signal 20 and a quadrature (Q) signal 22, respectively.

[0028] For clarity, mixer 16 is illustrated in simplified form. For example, mixer 16 may include one or more mixer circuits to generate I signal 20 and Q signal 22 . In one example, mixer 16 includes a first mixer directly coupled to local oscillator...

Abstract

An amplifier chain with sequential DC offset correction for use in a radio frequency receiver is provided. The amplifier chain has at least a first and a second amplifier stage connected in series. The first and second amplification stages include an amplifier and a track and hold circuit connected in parallel across the amplifier. The track and hold circuit has a track state and a hold state. Control signals are coupled to track and hold circuits of the first and second amplifier stages. The control signal is configured to set the track and hold circuit to the track state, which can be done simultaneously and sequentially to set the track and hold circuit of the first stage to the hold state, and the track and hold circuit of the second stage The circuit is set to hold state.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to the field of amplifiers, and more particularly to high gain amplifiers. Background technique [0002] Known wireless telephones include, but are not limited to, analog telephones using analog transmission formats, such as circuits utilizing the AMPS standard, and digital telephones using digital transmission formats, such as TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) applications, which include but are not Limited to standards such as IS-136, GSM, and the Next Generation ("G3") wireless telephony standard. [0003] Increased battery life is one of the advantages of digital radiotelephones over analog radiotelephones. For example, while in standby mode (ie, the phone is on but not making a phone call), an analog phone typically continuously monitors available channels for incoming phone calls. Also, during a radiotelephone call, the receive circuitry of the analog telephone typically continues to receive telephone ...
