Problems solved by technology

However, typical permanent anti-frost coatings do not provide effective frost resistance over wide temperature gradients
Most notably, lower temperature storage and display cases (0°C and below) often develop frost and frost, so with current anti-frost coatings, optimal visibility is not achieved

Embodiment 1

[0052] A frost protection assembly comprising a frost protection layer placed on a polycarbonate film was fabricated using a polyurethane frost protection layer formed from a composition (vol %) comprising the formulation below.

[0053] FSI 106-94 * Part A: 47.6% hydrophilic polyol (10 parts by weight)

[0054] FSI 106-94 * Part B: 19.1% isocyanate prepolymerization (4 parts by weight)

[0055] thing

[0056] tert-butanol 25.0% solvent (5.25 parts by weight)

[0057] diacetone alcohol ** 8.3% solvent (1.75 parts by weight)

[0058] * Acquired from Film Specialties, Inc.

[0059] ** 4-Hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone

[0060] The formulation was applied to a film using a wire wound knife coater coating technique, and the film was cured, and the solvent was removed in a box oven with active air flow. Coating thickness is 0.005-0.0065 inches (127-165 microns), curing temperature is about 235°F (113°C) (between 230°F and 250°F (110°C-121°...

Embodiment 2

[0069] The anti-frost film assembly described above was applied to a refrigeration unit in an actual grocery store. The refrigeration unit was set at -29°C, the air temperature in the unit was -23°C and the air in the store was 21°C-24°C at 40-50% RH. Under these conditions, no frosting was observed on the door to which the anti-frost material was applied, even after 1 minute of opening. Doors without frost protection material will frost in 10-15 seconds. No difference was observed between doors that were heated and had an anti-frost film assembly, and those doors that were not heated but had an anti-frost film assembly. This would allow an average store with 100-140 doors to operate without heated doors, saving the store approximately 60 amps.

Abstract

A repositionable and substantially transparent multi-layer anti-fog film assembly (110) comprising a film (130) and an anti-fog layer (120) formed from a polyurethane-film forming composition comprising a surfactant having an isocyanate-reactive moiety and a hydrophobic region and a hydrophilic region effective to provide the layer with anti-fog properties at temperatures that alternate between -23 DEG C and 65 DEG C. Specifically, those compositions which incorporate into the polyurethane backbone a surfactant having a hydroxyl group and distinct hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions to alter surface energy as well as incorporating hydrophilic groups to increase the hydrophilicity of the polyurethane without substantially compromising its scratch resistance and chemical resistance. Optionally, an anti-fog film assembly (110) comprises an adhesive layer (140).; The anti-fog film assembly (110) to be applied with any of a variety of substantially transparent substrates (390) to provide condensation-resistant articles (300) including refrigerator doors (400) and panels (490).

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The present application relates to multilayer film assemblies useful for frost protection, methods of making the same, and articles formed from the film assemblies. [0002] Condensation can occur on cooler surfaces when they come into contact with relatively warm, moist air. Depending on the temperature difference, condensation on the surface can be in the form of fog or frost, which affects light transmission and impairs visibility, especially in the case of substantially transparent surfaces. [0003] Anti-frost films are effective in many different applications. For example, the buying and selling of refrigeration commodities often involves the direct selection of refrigeration units by consumers. To ensure effective merchandising, the items within the case should remain visible and discernible to customers viewing through the light-transmissive, usually substantially transparent, panel or door. When a customer selects an item and open...
