Embodiment Construction

[0023] Optically addressable light valves offer several advantages over other large-screen commercial imaging technologies such as MEMS, liquid crystal on silicon, or high temperature polysilicon. For example, certain embodiments of the invention offer substantial cost advantages over these techniques. Compared to projection techniques using color sequential modulation or multiple light valve systems with limited surface area (such as is the case with liquid crystal displays on silicon), the light valve implementations described here are able to maintain étendue to a much more significant level. Condensation can be conceptualized as the efficiency of light flux through different optics. When a light source is coupled to a light engine, the light concentration is a measure of the light efficiency of coupling. If the source is a laser, the light concentration can usually be easily maintained. When the source is a non-point source as is commonly used in the field of large-scre...

Abstract

An optical device has an electrically insulating first barrier layer disposed over a first electrode layer, a photoconductive layer disposed over the first barrier layer, and a carrier confining layer disposed over the photoconducting layer. The carrier confining layer defines a volume throughout which a plurality of carrier traps are dispersed. Further, an electrically insulating second barrier layer is disposed over the carrier confining layer, a light blocking layer is disposed over the second barrier layer for blocking light of a selected wavelength band. A reflective layer is disposed over the light blocking layer for reflecting light within the selected wavelength band, a birefringent or dispersive layer is disposed over the reflective layer, and an optically transmissive second electrode layer is disposed over the birefringent or dispersive layer. A method is also disclosed, as are additional layers intervening between those detailed above.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to optically addressable spatial light modulators (OASLMs), sometimes termed light valves. Background technique [0002] There are a number of different technical approaches for producing visible light displays, especially large-scale displays such as those characterized by large-screen televisions. Liquid crystal displays typically exhibit high resolution and an advantage in thickness (eg, about 3 inches). These are typically limited in size to 42" (diagonal) or less because of cost constraints and the fact that drive currents cannot be easily maintained along very long amorphous silicon row or column drive lines, requiring very Complex drive electronics. LCDs suffer from the disadvantage that a single pixel can severely degrade resolution across the display; large pieces of glass have fewer large panels, so yield loss is highly non-linear and scales with display size And lower. [0003] Another technology for large di...
