Embodiment 1

[0087] In separation electrochemical cells, tetrabutylammonium halides, preferably tetrabutylammonium bromide, are used as electrolytes on gold electrodes (cathode), in aqueous methanolic media, at -1.5 V vs. Ag / AgCl reference electrode or At -4V, reduce CO 2 And electrolyze water to get CO and H at the cathode 2 The best 1:2 mixture. Pure oxygen is produced at the anode along with some bromine.

Embodiment 2

[0089] In split electrochemical cells, use 0.1M KHCO 3 Aqueous solution as electrolyte for CO reduction on gold cathode 2 , at -3.2 V relative to the Ag / AgCl reference electrode, the reduction of CO 2 And electrolyze water to obtain CO and H suitable for methanol synthesis 2 The best 1:2 mixture. Pure oxygen is produced at the anode.

Abstract

An environmentally beneficial method of producing methanol from varied sources of carbon dioxide including flue gases of fossil fuel burning power plants, industrial exhaust gases or the atmosphere itself. Converting carbon dioxide by an electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide in a divided electrochemical cell that includes an anode in one cell compartment and a metal cathode electrode in another cell compartment that also contains an aqueous solution comprising methanol and an electrolyte of one or more alkyl ammonium halides, alkali carbonates or combinations thereof to produce therein a reaction mixture containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen which can be subsequently used to produce methanol while also producing oxygen in the cell at the anode.

Description

Background technique [0001] Hydrocarbons are extremely important in modern life. Hydrocarbons are used as fuels and as raw materials in a variety of fields including the chemical, petrochemical, plastics and rubber industries. Fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas consist of hydrocarbons with varying ratios of carbon to hydrogen and are used non-renewably when burned, forming carbon dioxide and water. Despite their widespread applications and high demand, fossil fuels also exhibit numerous disadvantages, including limited reserves, irreversible combustion, and impact on air pollution and global warming. Given these disadvantages and the increased demand for energy, alternative energy sources are needed. [0002] One such alternative that is often mentioned is hydrogen, and the so-called "hydrogen economy". Hydrogen is beneficial as a clean fuel, producing only water when burned. However, free hydrogen is not a natural energy source, and its production from hydroca...
