Embodiment 1

[0040] Embodiment 1 (comparison)

[0041] In this example, cis-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene was used as blowing agent. Premix Polyol A, surfactant, catalyst and blowing agent by hand, then mix with polyisocyanate. The resulting mixture was poured into 8"x 8"x 2.5" cartons to form polyurethane foam, and 6"x 6"x 1.5" foam samples were cut after 24 hours. The foam samples were stored at 25±2°C for 28 days, and the foam volume was measured again to calculate the volume change. A 66% reduction in foam volume was found after 28 days. The formulations and properties of the foams are shown in Tables 1 and 2 below.

Embodiment 2

[0046] Embodiment 2 (foreseeing)

[0047] By using the same formulation as described above in Example 1, a polyurethane foam was prepared in the same manner, except that trans-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene was used instead 50% cis-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene blowing agent was used as co-blowing agent. The resulting foam was found to have lost only 15% in volume after 28 days. The formulations and properties of the polyurethanes are shown in Tables 3 and 4 below. By using a foam containing a mixture of trans-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene and cis-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene Forming the composition, the foam shrinkage decreased from 66% to 15%. Thus, foam shape stability is significantly improved.

Abstract

A foam-forming composition is disclosed which includes both trans-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene and an active hydrogen-containing compound having two or more active hydrogens. Also disclosed is a closed-cell polyurethane or polyisocyanurate polymer foam prepared from reaction of effective amounts of the foam-forming composition and a suitable polyisocyanate. Also disclosed is a process for producing a closed-cell polyurethane or polyisocyanurate polymer foam comprising: reacting an effective amount of the foam-forming composition and a suitable polyisocyanate.

Description

field of invention [0001] The disclosure herein relates to foam-forming compositions comprised of fluoroolefin blowing agents and active hydrogen-containing compounds and the use of such compositions in the preparation of polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams. More specifically, the disclosure herein relates to foams composed of trans-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene and active hydrogen-containing compounds having two or more active hydrogens Forming compositions, and the use of such compositions in the preparation of polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams. Background of the invention [0002] Closed-cell foams based on polyisocyanates are widely used for insulating purposes, for example in building construction and in the manufacture of energy-efficient electrical equipment. In the construction industry, polyurethane / polyisocyanurate specification panels are used as roofing and siding materials due to their thermal insulation properties and load-bearing capacity.
