Abstract

An internal combustion engine (1) includes exhaust valves (3, 4) for removing exhaust gas from a combustion chamber and an engine braking device (2) with a hydraulic valve control unit (29) by which the exhaust valves are held in an intermediate open position when the engine braking device (2) is actuated. The internal combustion engine (1) includes a hydraulic valve lash compensation mechanism (11) for the exhaust valves (3, 4) and a control channel (41) formed between the hydraulic valve control unit and an oil feed channel (9) for feeding oil to the hydraulic valve control unit (29) which can be closed by a closure element (48) to compensate for valve lash of the exhaust valves (3, 4). A counter-holder (53) is constructed as a piston-cylinder unit that forms a variable stop (52) for a valve bridge (5) cooperating with the valve lash compensation mechanism (11).
