Embodiment Construction

[0034] The TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) frames of the AIS signal are organized as described in the table below:

[0035]

[0036] Each frame consists of 2250 time slots in which ships can send their bursts. Here, the terms "burst", "message" or "packet" will be used to refer to informational data sent by ships in TDMA time slots. The TDMA structure is repeated on two channel channels, and each ship transmitter hops between the two channels.

[0037] The signal format consists of a binary GMSK modulation (modulation index equal to 0.5) with a BT (bandwidth-duration) product between 0.4 and 0.5 (nominal: 0.4):

[0038] s ( t ) = 2 E s T e jπ Σ i α i ...

Abstract

Provided is an Automatic Identification System-AIS-receiver comprising at least one processing section (PS1, PS2) for synchronizing, demodulating and detecting AIS messages contained in a received signal, said processing steps are carried out separately for a plurality of frequency sub-bands (SB1, SB2, SB3) spanning an AIS channel (CH1, CH2); the receiver is characterized in that: said sub-bands overlap with each others; and said or each processing section is adapted for synchronizing, demodulating and detecting said AIS messages within each sub-band on the basis of timing error and carrier frequency estimations obtained from filtered replicas of said received signal, propagating along respective auxiliary signal paths.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver, particularly suitable for use in spacecraft. The invention also relates to a satellite communication payload comprising such a receiver. Background technique [0002] An Automatic Identification System (AIS) communication system is designed to provide identification and positioning information to ships at sea and to stations on shore in order to exchange different types of data including position, identification, route, speed, etc. On the one hand, this allows ships to anticipate and thus avoid conflicts at sea through continuous traffic monitoring using several navigation aids; on the other hand, AIS also provides an important ship monitoring service to coast guard or search and rescue organizations. [0003] Each ship equipped with AIS equipment broadcasts information (data) in small slots of 26.67ms. In each of these time slots, a 256 bit message is transmitted at ...
