Problems solved by technology

Currently streaming content is delivered using a protocol such as HTTP, and although certain parameters are specified (e.g., when to retrieve content files, what tags are involved, etc.), it is still not possible to provide a comprehensive streaming solution
Although used in many applications, setting up any new live streaming content facility requires new hardware, software, and significant investment

Embodiment Construction

[0038] refer to figure 1 , the system 10 shown includes a content playback device 12 that can be coupled to a local area network 16 by wire, wirelessly, or a combination of both. Also coupled to the local area network 16 are one or more remote controls 14a, which may be of any type capable of providing input to the content playback device 12 via the user interface 28 having an input controller 32 to control the user interface 15 having various menu items . In addition to the remote control 14a, the second display 14b can also be used to control the content playback device on the local area network 16. The second display 14b may employ a user interface 34 running a control application 36 . In some cases the second display 14b may be a laptop, tablet, handheld computer or other Internet device, or may include a mobile device such as a smart phone, which may be directly connected to the Internet 26 or the local area network 16 or both. Other types of second displays including ...

Abstract

Implementations of the system and method use an existing management server infrastructure to deliver video-on-demand or streaming content, including real-time live streaming. Existing client content playback devices, such as IPTVs, may be employed to stream content items, obtain advertisements, track user's viewing behaviors, and the like. By reusing existing client devices, there is no need for additional hardware purchases on the user side. By reusing existing management server infrastructures, capital expenses are also reduced. In such a system, a user can watch both video-on-demand and streaming audiovisual content.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a system, method and facility for live streaming content in real time. Background technique [0002] Facilities exist to provide Internet video from a variety of content providers or services. For example, Sony Corporation's Sony Internet Link ("BIVL") technology provides a hardware device that, when coupled to a broadband Internet connection, allows access to Internet video services through a managed server facility. These facilities deliver recorded audiovisual media content such as video, music and audio files. [0003] Streaming refers to the transfer of media content in a constant form from transmission at a source to reception and presentation at a sink. For example, Internet delivery of digital content presentations to network computers is typically streamed, as is Internet television content. Currently streaming content is delivered using protocols such as HTTP, and although certain parameters are specified...
