Embodiment 1

[0959] Epoxy formulations:

[0960] 100 parts by weight SU-8 (solid content: 30%, product of Micro Chem, cyclohexanone)

[0961] 0.15 parts by weight of sulfonium sulfate of formula Ia or Ib

[0962] Thermal Cure Testing of Epoxy Formulations

[0963] The sulfonium sulfate of Synthesis Example 1 was added to the solution of SU-8 and mixed. The mixture was applied onto a silicon wafer using a spin coater (1H-DX2, MIKASA). Solvent was removed by heating in a convection oven at 80 °C for 2 minutes. The dry film thickness was about 1.5 μm. The coating was further baked at 230°C for 30 minutes and 60 minutes. The conversion rate of epoxy group in baking is measured by FT-IR spectrometer (FT-720, HORIBA) before and after baking at 910cm -1 measured by IR absorption. The higher the conversion, the higher the activity of the sulfonium sulfate tested. The test results are given in Table 2.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a heat-curable composition comprising (a) at least one compound which is capable of undergoing cationic polymerization; and (b) at least one sulfonium sulfate selected from compounds of the formulae Ia and Ib where Yn- is a monovalent or divalent anion selected from (1) where n, M, R1 to R10 are as defined in claim 1 and in the description. The present invention also relates to novel sulfonium sulfates of the formulae Ia and Ib, to a process for curing cationically polymerizable material and to the cured material obtained by said process.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The invention relates to a thermally curable composition comprising at least one sulfonium sulfate, novel sulfonium sulfates, a method for curing cationically polymerizable substances and cured materials obtained by said method. Related technical description [0002] Cationic polymerization is initiated by cations generated by a cationic polymerization initiator. Catalysts known for cationic polymerization include sulfonium salts. The sulfonium salt showing the highest activity is one in which the anionic component of the sulfonium salt is antimony hexafluoride (SbF 6 - ), antimony hexachloride (SbCl 6 - ) and SbF 5 (OH) - of those. However, antimony is a highly toxic substance and is not desirable for practical use. Commercially available non-toxic sulfonium salts such as sulfonium phosphate have the disadvantage of insufficient curing properties. [0003] WO2009 / 047152 discloses the general formula [R 1 R 2 R 3 S] + Sulfonium ...
