example 1-2

[0148] A 6 foot by 5 foot (1.83 meter by 1.52 meter) area of worn vinyl composition floor tile that had been subjected to heavy pedestrian traffic over several months was subjected to the following grinding procedure.

[0149] An interface pad with hooks on both surfaces provided with a diamond structured abrasive disc (as above) was attached to a rotary floor machine equipped with a WSP1 mechanically driven pad operating at 175 rpm. Four T300 discs were then attached to the interface pad and the test area was abraded four times using a floor machine at 88 ft / min (26.82 meters / min). Surface finish, gloss and dry electrostatic coefficient of friction values were then measured. The T300 disk was replaced with the T45 disk and the process was repeated, after which the surface finish, gloss and dry electrostatic coefficient of friction values were measured again. Continue the grinding process with successively finer T10 grinding discs. Surface finish, gloss and dry electro...

example 3 and comparative example A

[0153] These examples were performed using a vinyl composition tile floor in a laboratory building. Strip and rinse floor area. Use separate areas of the same floor for each instance. Example 3 A structured abrasive disc was used to prepare a floor for coating with 3M SCOTCHGARD VINYL FLOOR PROTECTOR, as described below. Comparative Example A A floor was prepared using the floor preparation procedure outlined in the 3M SCOTCHGARD VINYL FLOOR PROTECTOR Technical Data Sheet (February 2011). Following floor preparation, both examples followed the 3M SCOTCHGARD VINYL FLOOR PROTECTOR Technical Data Sheet (February 2011) application procedure.

Abstract

A method of refurbishing vinyl composition tile flooring includes sequentially wet abrading an exposed surface of a vinyl composition tile floor with a series of structured abrasive members (100) affixed to a machine driver pad (210), wherein the series of structured abrasive members (100) have decreasing abrasive particle size. The structured abrasive members (100) comprising shaped abrasive composites (140) affixed to a compliant backing (120), wherein the shaped abrasive composites (140) comprise the abrasive particles (145) dispersed in a polymeric binder (148). The method may include a prior abrading step using and aggressive nonwoven abrasive article. The method may include application of polymeric finish after abrading.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention broadly relates to methods for the maintenance and repair of vinyl composition tiles. Background technique [0002] Vinyl composition tiles are widely used as flooring in commercial and institutional environments such as grocery stores and other retail stores, schools, hospitals, light industrial applications such as laboratories, and restaurants. [0003] Two types of vinyl tiles exist. The first vinyl asbestos tiles were equivalent to asphalt tiles, except that vinyl-type resins were used as the binder instead of asphalt or other resins. For asphalt tile floors, asbestos, pigments and inert fillers are used. [0004] Vinyl asbestos tile has not been manufactured since about 1982. Remove asbestos and replace it with other fillers. Such floor tiles are commonly referred to as vinyl composition tiles (VC tiles). It is more porous than vinyl asbestos tile, so it is more difficult to develop an initial gloss. Due to the relativ...
