Problems solved by technology

If one LED of the LED chain fails as an open circuit, this is relatively easy to detect because the defective LED interrupts the current flow to the entire LED chain
However, if one LED of the LED chain fails as a short, only the defective LED stops radiating, which can be more difficult to detect

Abstract

A method and circuit are described in which a maximum voltage is determined from among a plurality of series load voltages, where each series load voltage of the plurality of series load voltages is a voltage defined by a corresponding series of N loads of a plurality of series of N loads, where N is an integer greater than one. Also, a minimum voltage may be determined from among the plurality of series load voltages. Next, the maximum voltage from among the plurality of series load voltages may be compared with the minimum voltage from among the plurality of series load voltages to make a determination as to whether the maximum voltage from among the plurality of series load voltages exceeds the minimum from among the plurality of series load voltages by a threshold voltage. Then, an indication can be output based on the results of the determination.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to electronic circuits, and more particularly to fault detection in chains of electronic loads such as in light emitting diodes (LEDs). Background technique [0002] Lighting devices, such as lamps, which include light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as light-emitting components, generally cannot be simply connected to a voltage supply but must be driven by a special driver circuit (or control circuit) that provides a defined load current to the LEDs in order to provide the required voltage. The desired radiant power (radiant flux). Since individual LEDs exhibit only small forward voltages (ranging from about 1.5V for infrared GaAs LEDs up to 4V for violet and ultraviolet InGaN LEDs) compared to commonly used supply voltages (eg 12V, 24V and 42V in automotive applications) ), so several LEDs are connected in series to form a so-called LED chain. [0003] In many applications it is desirable to have fault detection included in th...
