[0030] Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention

[0031] Referring now to Figure 1, a labeler generally indicated by the reference numeral 10 is schematically shown. The web 12 of labeling material supplied to the labeler 10 is used to apply it to the container 14 . The web of labeling material 12 is cut into label sections 16 by a cutting drum 18 . The cutting drum 18 includes at least one cutting knife 20 which rotates together with the cutting drum. The cutter 20 cooperates with a cutter 22, which is fixedly mounted and, by rotating the cutter 20, is brought into periodic contact therewith. The vacuum drum 24 is used to suck the label segment 16 from the cutting drum 18 until the label segment is adhered to the container 14 .

[0032] According to the invention, the vacuum drum 24 has a first hole 26 and a second hole 28 . The vacuum in the first and second holes 26 and 28 is provided by one or more vacuum sources and maintained at different vacuum pressures. The vacuu...

Abstract

A method of labeling containers (14) utilizing a labeler (10) having multiple port vacuum drum (24) is disclosed. The multiple port vacuum drum (24) has a first cavity (26) which is supplied with one level of vacuum suitable for picking up label segments (16) from a cutter (18) with limited tension. The vacuum drum has a second cavity (28) which is supplied with another, higher level of vacuum suitable for firmly griping the label segments (16) as an adhesive of the like is applied to the label segment (16). The second cavity (28) may be further divided into a label application segment (96) with lower vacuum pressure. The cutter drum (18) has an arcuate cavity (70) to which vacuum is supplied at the end first contacting the labeling material web (12) with reduced vacuum being provided at the label cut off point and label release point.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method of labeling containers in which a vacuum drum supports segments of labeling material by varying vacuum levels generated within the drum, thereby allowing better control of the segments during operation. Background technique [0002] Labeling containers with pre-printed film labels is increasingly an alternative to traditional lithography. Various environmental concerns, including air pollution and recycling, are a strong driver for labeling containers with pre-printed films. Film labels are effective for labeling plastic bottles, metal cans and glass bottles. [0003] Cost considerations have led to the development of films, which have the advantage of reducing the cost of materials used, but require stricter process control so that high-speed labeling devices can handle thin, stretchable, and relatively fragile labels. Paste material. [0004] In factories producing large quantities of cans and bottles: lab...
