[0094]A first experiment was carried out by preparing two building panels according to the following method. The wood veneer is bonded to the aluminum base layer using a hot melt polyurethane adhesive containing a flame retardant. The wood veneer was approximately 30 mils thick, while the aluminum base was approximately 27 mils thick. For one of the building panels, the exposed upper surface of the wood veneer layer is coated with a conventional UV-curable top coat comprising an acrylate functional polymer, resulting in a top coat thickness of from about 1 mil to about 2 mils. in the mil range. Another building panel was left uncoated. Each building board was then subjected to an ASTM E-84 test to measure surface flame spread and smoke density. The results are provided in Table 1 below.
