Embodiment Construction

[0047] The present invention correlates the presence of NADH with bacterial infection. The present invention can also combine the presence of NADH with other microbial agents such as fungi (e.g. Candida albicans ( Candida albicans ) etc.) or associated with yeast.

[0048] Embodiments of the present invention provide a method for the selective detection of bacterial and / or fungal or yeast microbial infection by detecting the concentration of NADH from a bacterial culture. The concentration of NADH was detected by means of cyclic voltammetry or chronoamperometry applied to electrochemically active polymers.

[0049] Embodiments of the present invention also provide an electrochemical sensor for the selective detection of bacterial infection. The proposed electrochemical sensor comprises solid substrates acting as supports, such as threads, films, sutures, meshes, 3D structures, etc., which are notably made of non-toxic and biocompatible materials, but this is not limiting ,...

Abstract

A method, an electrochemical sensor and a system for selective detection of infections are disclosed. The method comprises detecting a concentration of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, NADH, from a bacterial culture through a cyclic voltammetry or chronoamperometry applied to an electrochemically active polymer. Therefore, prokaryotic cells can be detected while eukaryotic cells remain undetected. The infections can include bacterial infections and fungi or yeasts microbial infections.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to the field of electrochemical detection of prokaryotic cells. In particular, the present invention relates to methods, electrochemical sensors and systems for the selective detection of bacteria (in addition to other prokaryotic microbial agents such as fungi and yeasts). Background technique [0002] Bacteria embed themselves in a hydrated extracellular matrix of polysaccharides and proteins, forming a slimy layer called a biofilm. Biofilms, which are considered to be adaptations of microorganisms to hostile environments, arise after the initial adhesion of bacteria to any kind of living or inert surface and their subsequent fixed growth and multiplication. During the growth phase, bacteria produce extracellular biopolymers that extend to form complex frameworks of molecular fibers with unique characteristics, one of the most important of which is their ability to impede the entry of antimicrobial agents thro...
