Abstract
The present disclosure provides a pellet. In one embodiment, the pellet includes a body having a first end and an opposing second end. The body is made of a polymer material. The body has a length, a diameter (body diameter), and a channel. The channel has a diameter (channel diameter) that extends through the body from the first end to the second end. An additive is located in the channel.
Description
Background technique [0001] Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) is widely used for high voltage insulation in power transmission systems. One way to produce XLPE is via a silane / moisture cure process. In the silane / moisture curing process, silanes are grafted onto polyethylene during reactive extrusion in the presence of peroxide initiators. The resulting silane-grafted resin yields silane-crosslinked polyethylene. [0002] Disadvantages of the silane / moisture cure process include the environmental, health and safety hazards associated with handling and using silanes and peroxides. In addition, peroxide crosslinking of polyethylene produces by-products due to the decomposition of the peroxide. For example, dicumyl peroxide (DCP, a common crosslinking agent) typically decomposes during polyethylene crosslinking and produces methane, acetophenone, and cumyl alcohol. These cross-linking by-products can adversely affect the electrical properties of XPLE power cables. [0003] Th...
