Embodiment

[0093] In this example, a biaxially oriented, microvoided polyolefin sheet was laminated to a photographic grade cellulose paper base and coated with a commonly used photosensitive silver halide emulsion (Sample 2). The microvoided polyolefin sheet used in the present invention contained a voided layer with a compression percentage of 25%. The invention was compared to a commercially available silver halide photographic paper (Example 1) using polyethylene coated paper as the support. This example will demonstrate a significant improvement in percent compression compared to prior art photographic papers. Furthermore, this example will also show that when a compressive load is applied to an unexposed silver halide imaging layer, the formation of unwanted latent images is significantly reduced. Finally, several advantages in the production process resulting from a compression percentage of 25% will be apparent.

Abstract

This invention relates to a photographic element comprising at least one silver halide containing imaging layer and a cushioning layer below said at least one imaging layer having a compression percentage of between 5 and 25%.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to photographic elements. In a preferred form, the present invention relates to materials for photofinishing. Background technique [0002] In forming color photographic papers, it is known to apply a layer of polymer, usually polyethylene, to the base paper. The function of this layer is to provide waterproofing to the base paper and to provide a smooth surface for the photosensitive layer formed thereon. Although polyethylene does provide a water-resistant layer to the base paper, the melt-extruded polyethylene used in color photographic paper has little dimensional strength and, therefore, cannot be used alone as a carrier for images. US 5,244,861 suggests the use of biaxially oriented polypropylene in the receiver layer for thermal dye transfer printing. In this patent, a high strength biaxially oriented sheet is laminated to cellulose paper with low density polyethylene. The biaxially oriented sheet used in said patent i...
