Embodiment Construction

[0025] One embodiment of the present invention is a UV curable ink composition for inkjet printing, especially for industrial inkjet printing. Another embodiment is a method of curing one or more such inks. Another embodiment is an inkjet printer using this method.

[0026] By industrial inkjet printing, it is meant inkjet printing on non-paper and paper substrates, such as coated and uncoated wallpaper, laminated substrates, plastics, thin metal foils, aluminum foils, vinyl films, and Inkjet printing on paper. In one embodiment of the inkjet printer, the substrate is provided in roll form. Typical substrates do not require any special treatment or coating, although coatings are known to be used to improve the quality of prints.

[0027] One embodiment of the inks is for halftone inkjet printing of up to 6 inks in one pass, such as CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) and up to two special colors for spot colors. ink. A grayscale inkjet head with 360 pixels per inch (u...

Abstract

UV curable inkjet ink compositions comprising little or no photoinitiator, and methods of polymerizing such inkjet inks having one or more viscosity and surface tension suitable for inkjet printing. The UV curable inkjet ink comprises 20-40% by weight of one or more monofunctional acrylates, 35%-55% by weight of one or more difunctional acrylates, 5-15% by weight of one or more trifunctional acrylates, not more than about 5% by weight of one or more pigments; and a small amount of a photoinitiator. An embodiment also includes 5-15% by weight of one or more highly reactive acrylates and 0.5-1.5% by weight of a stabilizer. The method involves depositing one or more inks on a substrate in an inkjet printer using one or more inkjet heads, irradiating the deposited ink with UV radiation with higher UVC radiation ("UVC-rich radiation"), rich in The UVC radiation is generated by a first UV source and is irradiated while the substrate is moving relative to the first UV source. The method also includes depleting the area near the surface of the substrate from oxygen so that the area between the first UV source and the applied ink is relatively free of oxygen during irradiation to increase the amount of UVC reaching the ink and reduce The reduction caused by the available oxygen of any photoinitiator in the ink. The ink is relatively free of photoinitiators.

Description

technical background [0001] The present invention relates to inkjet inks that are relatively free of photoinitiators and methods and apparatus for curing one or more of such inkjet inks. [0002] Inkjet printing is well known in which one or more inkjet inks are sprayed onto a substrate. It is also known to cure inkjet inks using ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which causes polymerization of the ink. [0003] Inkjet inks generally require low viscosity. However, low viscosity generally results in low reactivity. In order to improve the reactivity, one or more photoinitiators are often used in inkjet inks, generally at a concentration of 5%-10%. Photoinitiators are molecules that are excited by UV radiation to generate free radicals and start the polymerization process. [0004] Oxygen is known to interfere with any photo-induced process. This is one reason for being UV curable, inkjet inks generally contain a large amount of photoinitiator in air which enables them to be UV c...
