Ambulatory infusion smart pumps safely deliver medication to patients in hospital, home care and alternative care facilities. The pump is used to deliver medication while allowing the patient to be mobile.

Methods and apparatuses for detecting occlusions in an ambulatory infusion pump

An improved pump, reservoir and reservoir piston are provided for controlled delivery of fluids. A motor is operably coupled to a drive member, such as a drive screw, which is adapted to advance a plunger slide in response to operation of the motor. The plunger slide is removably coupled to the piston. A method, system, and an article of manufacture for automatically detecting an occlusion in a medication infusion pump is provided. The electrical current to an infusion pump is measured. Based on measurements of one or more variables, the infusion pump detects whether there is an occlusion in the system. The methods of detecting occlusions may be dynamic.

Method and apparatus for detecting errors, fluid pressure, and occlusions in an ambulatory infusion pump

An improved pump, reservoir and reservoir piston are provided for controlled delivery of fluids. A motor is operably coupled to a drive member, such as a drive screw, which is adapted to advance a plunger slide in response to operation of the motor. The plunger slide is removably coupled to the piston. A method, system, and an article of manufacture for automatically detecting a force sensor failure in a medication infusion pump is provided. The electrical current to an infusion pump is measured. Based on the current measurements, the infusion pump detects when the plunger slide is seated in the reservoir, and detects a problem with the force sensor when the force sensor independently fails to register a value indicating that the plunger slide is seated in the reservoir.

Advanced step therapy delivery for an ambulatory infusion pump and system

ActiveUS20110137239A1Drug and medicationsMedical devicesStep therapyPlateau
Embodiments relate to systems, methods and devices for delivering a drug or other therapy to a patient with an ambulatory infusion pump configured to provide a series of tolerance-building steps leading up to a plateau delivery rate. The plateau delivery rate is maintained until the prescribed amount of drug or therapy fluid is delivered to the patient. Embodiments of the invention include providing the patient or other user with a mechanism to decrease, or step down, the therapy delivery rate if a tolerance was not achieved at a lower rate, and providing notifications prior to a step up in a dosage delivery rate.

Guided user help system for an ambulatory infusion system

An ambulatory infusion pump can include a guided user help system that allows for a user to correct an error with the pump without needing to summon a home healthcare aide or other medical professional. When an error occurs with the pump, the user can select an option to receive help with the error. The help screen can display a possible solution for correcting the error that the user can follow. Additional help screens can display additional possible solutions if prior possible solution prove ineffective at correcting the problem.

Infusion pumps

Ambulatory infusion pumps, pump assemblies, cartridges, baseplates, cannulas, insertion tools, and related components as well as combinations thereof and related methods. One method of dispensing medicament from a cartridge includes pushing a plunger so as to controllably dispense out of a medicament reservoir within the cartridge in accordance with a stored delivery profile an amount of medicament of 0.1% or less of the total filled volume of the reservoir and with a single-dose precision of better than plus or minus 20%. The single-dose precision is obtained after a time-to-precision period of less than eight hours, which begins at the onset of the first plunger pushing for the cartridge, during which the plunger is being pushed in accordance with the stored delivery profile.

System and method for maximum insulin pump bolus override

An ambulatory infusion pump can include a maximum bolus override procedure. When a bolus amount greater than a maximum bolus amount is requested, the pump can provide an alert indicating that the amount requested exceeds the maximum bolus amount. If the user confirms the request in response to the alert, the bolus amount can be delivered to the user. The amount delivered in response to the confirmation can be a first portion of the bolus amount. A reminder can then be provided that a second portion of the bolus amount that is a remaining portion of the requested bolus amount was also requested. If a second confirmation is received in response to the alert, the second portion of the bolus amount can also delivered to the user.

System and method for switching between closed loop and open loop control of an ambulatory infusion pump

An infusion pump system providing therapy to a patient in a closed-loop or semi-closed loop mode can safely automatically revert to open-loop therapy. The system stores a default open-loop basal rate profile in memory. The system also continually tracks the insulin on board for the patient over a plurality of closed-loop therapy intervals. When an error or event occurs requiring reversion to open-loop therapy, the system automatically provides therapy according to the open-loop basal rate profile and the tracked insulin on board amount.

A dosing unit (12) for an ambulatory infusion pump device (10) comprises a cylinder pump with a cylinder (14) and a piston (16) arranged in said cylinder. The piston has a shaft (18) with a first threaded segment (50) interacting with a threaded portion (54) of the cylinder, and can be displaced along a longitudinal axis (48) of the cylinder by rotating the piston in regard to the cylinder around said axis. Furthermore the piston comprises means that allow the relative or absolute determination of the longitudinal and / or rotational displacement of the piston in regard to the cylinder. In a preferred embodiment the piston shaft (18) comprises a second segment (51) provided with optically detectable markings (64, 65) that allow the monitoring of the longitudinal and / or rotational displacement of the piston in regard to the cylinder.

Methods for reduction of battery usage in ambulatory infusion pumps

A battery-powered infusion pump for delivery of insulin or other medicament may collect and store data related to the pump. The infusion pump can communicate some or all of the stored data to another device, and control the timing and amount of data communicated in order to conserve battery life.
