[0057] Efficacy testing was performed by placing CSR wrapped trays (3.5" x 10" x 20") including representative medical devices and test lumens in a 20 liter aluminum chamber (4.4" x 12" x 22"). will be seeded with at least 1 x 10 6 A one-inch stainless steel wire of Bacillus spores was placed within the center of each of the test lumens. The effect with and without temperature control on the diffusion path was studied for a TEFLON, Teflon lumen with an inner diameter of 1 mm and a length of 700 mm and a stainless steel lumen with an inner diameter of 1 mm and a length of 500 mm. All lumens are open at both ends. Each of the samples was subjected to a sterilization cycle for 5 minutes in a 20-liter vacuum chamber maintained at 40 degrees Celsius and 3 Torr. 1.44ml of 59% aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution was injected into the vaporizer maintained at 60°C at atmospheric pressure. Then the 5 minute timer starts and the chamber is pumped to 3 Torr, which takes less than a minu...

Abstract

A method is provided for inactivating prions and is particularly effective in inactivating prions on medical devices. An article having a quantity of prions thereon is placed into a sterilization chamber. Pressure in the sterilization chamber is lowered to a pressure below the vapor pressure of hydrogen peroxide and a solution of hydrogen peroxide is admitted into the sterilization chamber and placed into contact with the article to inactivate prions on the article.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the treatment of articles, and more particularly to the treatment of articles to inactivate prions thereon. Background technique [0002] Most medical instruments are sterilized before use. Most are sterilized and sold in protective packaging to maintain their sterility until the package is opened and the instrument is used in a medical procedure. Some instruments are reused and must be sterilized before such reuse. Common sterilization methods include high temperature steam, irradiation, and chemical steam sterilization such as ethylene oxide and hydrogen peroxide. [0003] Prions are protein infectious agents that cause a similar fatal brain disease known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE). These diseases include Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle, also known as "mad cow disease," scrapie in sheep, and wasting disease in elk and deer. Variant C...
