Embodiment Construction

[0028] To facilitate an understanding of the principles of the invention, reference will now be made to the embodiments illustrated in the drawings and specific language will be used to describe the same. It is understood, however, that no limitation of the scope of the invention is thereby intended. Any alterations and further modifications in the described embodiments and any further applications of the inventive principles described herein are contemplated as would normally occur to one skilled in the art to which the invention pertains.

[0029] One embodiment of the invention includes an ultrasound device structured for percutaneous insertion into a human body. The device includes an array of piezoelectric elements at the distal end and cables connected to the array, the cables extending to the proximal end of the device and connected to an ultrasound imaging system. The elements in the array are designed to transmit and / or receive high frequency (eg, about 15 MHz and ab...

Abstract

An intravascular ultrasound catheter having an imaging array and ablation electrodes is provided. The imaging array and ablation electrodes are forward facing and the catheter can be used to ablate plaque in partially or totally occluded blood vessels under real time ultrasound visualization. The ablation electrodes are integrated into the distal face of the catheter and allow ultrasound to pass through them, which provides the ability to achieve highly accurate real time visualization of the tissue undergoing treatment.

Description

[0001] relevant application data [0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 60 / 962,169, filed July 27, 2007, and claims priority to U.S. Utility Model Application Serial No. 12 / 122,456, filed May 16, 2008, which are hereby incorporated by reference refer to. Background technique [0003] The present application relates to ultrasound imaging catheters for medical use. More specifically, but not exclusively, it relates to intravascular catheters with high frequency ultrasound imaging arrays capable of providing high quality, real time, forward looking images. Alternatively or additionally, the present application relates to the incorporation of "see-through" ablation electrodes in front of an ultrasound imaging array to facilitate image-guided therapy within a body cavity. [0004] Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) has been successfully implemented as a visualization tool to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases. (S...
