Problems solved by technology

[0009] The two limitations of the current art described above are associated with relatively high costs, making the reprocessing or recycling of these polycondensates uneconomical
There are still other disadvantages associated with many existing chain extenders
For example, one disadvantage of condensation polymers is the presence of certain types of terminal functional groups

Embodiment 2

[0079] Example 2: The capping additive designed and prepared in the above-mentioned Example 1 was used as a processing aid for polylactic acid (PLA 4042D, Natureworks Corporation) to evaluate it. The conditions of the mixing drum are shown in Table 6 below. The reaction was carried out in a Brabender conical twin screw extrude. Under the condition that the end-capping compound concentration is 8~10% by weight, observe the change of low torque value to time, such as figure 1 , showing successful capping.

Embodiment 3

[0082]Example 3: The end-capped PLA designed and prepared in Example 2 above was evaluated for chain extension treatment. Chain extenders were designed and prepared according to the guidelines of US Patent Nos. 6,984,694 and 6,552,144. The mixing drum conditions are shown in Table 7 below. The reaction was carried out in a Brabender conical twin-screw extruder. demonstrated that capped, chain-extended PLA blends prepared with capping compounds at concentrations of 8-10 wt. % were similar to fresh PLA without any additives, as figure 2 shown.

Abstract

A polymeric composition including a mono-functional, low molecular weight, low epoxy content end-cap which includes the polymerization product of at least one epoxy-functional monomer and at least one styrenic and / or (meth)acrylic monomer, with a polyfunctional chain extender; and at least one condensation polymer.

Description

technical field [0001] In general, the present invention relates to polymers. In particular, the invention relates to low molecular weight end-caps useful for chain extending polycarbonate and other materials, and articles made from these materials. Background of the invention [0002] Many condensation or step-growth polymers, including polyesters, polyamides, polycarbonates, and polyurethanes, are widely used to make plastic products such as films, bottles, and other molded products. The mechanical and physical properties of these polymers depend largely on their molecular weight. [0003] During the product lifecycle, after the synthesis step, these materials can go through an extrusion step and a final processing step which can be a further compounding / extrusion operation followed by profile or precision sheet forming , thermoforming, blow molding, or fiber spinning, or these materials can be injection molded or molded in the molten state. Typically, all of these step...
