Embodiment 1

[0017] A preservation challenge test was performed to evaluate the performance of the blends in finished cosmetic formulations. Testing was performed in the shampoo and lotion bases described herein. Standard mixed bacterial cultures were prepared as follows. Three separate Tryptic Soy Agar slant cultures of Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538), Escherichia coli (ATCC 8739) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 9027) were incubated at about 35°C for -24 hours. Each slant culture was then washed with 5 mL of sterile phosphate buffered saline (Phosphate Buffered Dilution Water, PBDW). Transfer this 5 mL to another 5 mL of BPDW to obtain a total of 10 mL of individual bacterial suspension. The absorbance at 530 nm of each individual suspension was determined spectrophotometrically after calibrating the instrument with a PBDW blank. Normalize each individual suspension to ~10 9 CFU / mL. From each individual suspension 5 ml were aseptically transferred into a sterile sample cup to obta...

Embodiment 2

[0034] The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for each component and binary formulation was determined as follows. Individual bacterial suspensions of Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive), Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (both Gram-negative) and individual fungal suspensions of Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger were prepared as described in Example 1 . Each suspension was normalized with PBDW to obtain ~10 8 CFU / mL or ~10 7 Bacteria / mL of each bacteria and fungi.

[0035] The components and binary formulations were diluted in DI water or propylene glycol (where appropriate to dissolve) to obtain a total of 10,000 ppm original active solution. Using this 10,000 ppm solution, a 1:9 dilution was made in sterile Nutrient Broth to obtain a 1,000 ppm active solution. Transfer 5 mL of the resulting 1,000 ppm dilution to 5 mL of sterile nutrient broth (NB) to obtain a 500 ppm active solution. This dilution scheme was repeated until down to 3.90 ppm activity....

Abstract

The present invention discloses a preservative formulation comprising the combination of at least two compounds having bactericidal and / or fungicidal properties, wherein the respective combination is selected from the group consisting of methylisothiazolinone / piroctone olamine; caprylyl glycol / dehydroacetic acid; undecanol / dehydroacetic acid and lauryl alcohol / sorbic acid.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention discloses synergistic preservative formulations comprising bactericidal and fungicidal compounds, methods of reducing the bacterial and fungal load of formulations and the use of synergistic preservative formulations of the invention for reducing the bacterial and fungal load of formulations. Background technique [0002] A large number of personal, household and industrial products, formulations and preparations need to be protected from bacterial and fungal contamination. This is usually achieved by adding formaldehyde releasers and / or parabens due to the good bactericidal and fungicidal properties of these compounds. [0003] However, these compounds of the prior art have some serious disadvantages, namely their retention capacity is so high that their effect lasts even, as in the case of lotions, which are applied to the skin, absorbed, distributed in the blood And after depositing on the major organs of the body. Since form...
