Problems solved by technology

Firstly, the finite rate of diffusion of the analyte into the dielectric of the sensing element results in an inherent delay, and secondly, the resulting measurement signal is an analog signal, and converting this analog signal into the digital domain adds additional processing steps and associated delays

Embodiment Construction

[0036] It should be understood that the drawings are merely schematic and not drawn to scale. It should also be understood that the same reference numerals are used throughout the drawings to designate the same or similar parts.

[0037] figure 1 A first embodiment of a capacitive sensor 100 of the invention is schematically depicted. The sensor 100 comprises a sensing array 110 comprising a plurality of capacitive elements 120 which may be arranged in a suitable layout. figure 2 A non-limiting example of such a layout is shown in which a plurality of capacitive elements 120 share a common electrode 126 that is connected to individual electrodes 122 through a dielectric 124. 1-n Separated, the dielectric 124 has a dielectric constant that is sensitive to the level of moisture absorbed by the dielectric. A non-limiting example of a suitable embodiment of the dielectric is polyimide, although other suitable materials will be apparent to the skilled artisan. Such as image ...

Abstract

Disclosed is a sensor (100, 200) for sensing an analyte of interest, the sensor comprising a plurality of capacitive elements (120), each capacitive element comprising a pair of electrodes (122, 126) separated by a dielectric medium (124) wherein the dielectric constant of the dielectric medium of at least one of the capacitive elements is sensitive to the analyte of interest, the sensor further comprising a comparator (130, 230) adapted to compare a selected set of said capacitive elements against a reference signal and to generate a comparison result signal, and a controller (150, 250) for iteratively selecting said set in response to said comparison result signal, wherein the sensor is arranged to produce a digitized output signal indicative of the sensed level of the analyte of interest. An IC comprising such a sensor, an electronic device comprising such an IC and a method of determining a level of an analyte of interest using such a sensor are also disclosed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a sensor for sensing an analyte of interest comprising a capacitive sensing element having electrodes separated by a dielectric having a dielectric constant sensitive to the analyte of interest. [0002] The invention also relates to an integrated circuit (IC) comprising such a sensor. [0003] The invention also relates to electronic equipment comprising such an IC. [0004] The invention also relates to methods of using such sensors to determine the level of an analyte of interest. Background technique [0005] Today, integrated circuits (ICs) may include capacitive sensors such as moisture-sensitive sensors such as relative humidity (RH) sensors or liquid immersion sensors. detection) sensor. The capacitive sensing elements of such sensors typically include pairs of electrodes, ie, capacitor plates separated by a dielectric, where the dielectric constant of the dielectric is sensitive to the level of the analyte o...
