Embodiment 1

[0052] Example 1 : Preparation of Formulation A

[0053] With a Silverson homogenizer (Silverson; Cincinnati, OH) equipped with a standard emulsifying head, 1763 g technical grade acetochlor, 146.9 g technical grade acetochlor and 90.0 g 27 (Dow Chemical; Midland, MI) in the organic phase consisting of 100.0g 25M (Mead Westvaco; Richmond, VA), 20.0 g Surfactant Blend A, 5.0 g GXL (Arch Chemicals; Smyrna, GA), 10.0g CL611 (FMC Biopolymers; Philadelphia, PA), 1.20g S (CPKelco; Atlanta, GA) and 1864g deionized water were emulsified in the aqueous phase. The speed of the homogenizer was gradually increased until the volume median particle size as measured using a Malvern Mastersizer 2000 laser diffraction particle size analyzer (Malvern; Westborough, MA) was About 8μm (at About 5000rpm available). The polyurea capsule walls were then formed by adding 216.1 g of a 10% aqueous solution of ethylenediamine (Aldrich; St. Louis, MO) with moderate agitation. Finally, 262.2...

[0054] Example 2 : Preparation of Formulation B

[0055] With a Silverson homogenizer (Silverson; Cincinnati, OH) equipped with a standard emulsifying head, 1736 g of technical grade acetochlor, 144.6 g of technical grade acetochlor and 119.7 g 27 (Dow Chemical; Midland, MI) in the organic phase consisting of 100.0g 25M (Mead Westvaco; Richmond, VA), 20.0 g Surfactant Blend A, 5.0 g GXL (Arch Chemicals; Smyrna, GA), 10.0g CL611 (FMC Biopolymers; Philadelphia, PA), 1.20g S (CPKelco; Atlanta, GA) and 1864g deionized water were emulsified in the aqueous phase. The speed of the homogenizer is gradually increased until the volume median particle size as measured by a Malvern Mastersizer2000 laser diffraction particle size analyzer is About 8μm (at About 5000rpm available). The polyurea capsule walls were then formed by adding 287.3 g of a 10% aqueous solution of ethylenediamine while stirring moderately. Finally, 127.7 g of deionized water was added to obtain a caps...

Embodiment 3

[0068] Example 3 :Greenhouse assessment of grain damage from pre-emergence applications

[0069] Several aqueous microcapsule suspensions containing acetochlor, as described herein, were tested for selectivity to cereals in pre-emergence herbicide spray applications in the greenhouse. Treatments were applied with a track sprayer manufactured by Allen Machine Works (Midland, MI). The sprayer delivered 187 liters per hectare (L / Ha) with an 8002E nozzle, a spray pressure of 262 kilopascal (kPa) pressure, and a velocity of 2.2 miles per hour (mph) (3.54 kilometers per hour (kph)). The nozzle height is 46 cm above the pot. Greenhouse Mineral Oil was used: Grit (80:20) with the following breakdown: 36%, 42% and 23% sand, silt and clay respectively and classified as having a pH of 7.9 2.4% organic matter and 10.4meq / 100g cation exchange capacity (CEC) of loam. The plant material was grown in a greenhouse with day and night temperatures set at 26 to 28°C. Natural light is suppl...

Abstract

Aqueous herbicidal capsule suspensions of acetochlor, containing microcapsules of defined size, shell wall composition and thickness which contain acetochlor and reduced levels of herbicide safener are provided. The aqueous herbicidal capsule suspensions of acetochlor provide commercially acceptable weed control and selectivity in cereal.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application 61 / 416,338, filed November 23, 2010. Background technique [0003] Chloroacetamide herbicides such as acetochlor, alachlor, butachlor, dimethenamide, metolachlor, S-metolachlor and propachlor are widely used in the control of weeds in crops such as cereals, peanuts, potatoes, soybeans, rapeseeds, sugar beets, sorghum (sorghum), kidney beans and cotton. Depending on the nature of the chloroacetamide herbicides and the intended application or use, compositions of these herbicides may also contain herbicide safeners or antidotes. [0004] Various herbicide safeners are well known in the art, for example, dichlormid (N,N-diallyldichloroacetamide), 2,2,5-trimethyl-3 -Dichloroacetyl-oxazolidine (R-29148) and furilazole (3-(dichloroacetyl)-5-(2-furyl)-2,2-dimethyloxazolidine ). Herbicide safeners are used with herbicides to minimize or eliminate any ph...
