Embodiment 1
[0073] Example 1: Preparation of a stable AKD dispersion according to the invention
[0074]The aqueous phase was prepared by dissolving 5.52 parts of C8-AGE-MPA in 79.38 parts of water and adjusting the pH to 3.0 with 10% sulfuric acid. Heat the aqueous phase to 80 to 85°C. Add 15 parts of Aquapel 364 Size (available from Hercules, Wilmington, DE) to the hot aqueous phase with stirring. The resulting premix was homogenized with a one pass homogenizer at 3000 psi. The homogenized product was cooled to room temperature and 0.1 part of alum was added. The final product had a total solids content of 16.6%, a pH of 3.1, an average particle size of 0.31 microns, and an initial Brookfield viscosity of 5 cps. After 4 weeks at 32°C, the viscosity was unchanged.
Embodiment 2
[0075] Embodiment 2: change C8-AGE-MPA content
[0076] AKD dispersions were prepared as described in Example 1, but using Aquapel 203 sizing agent (available from Hercules Corporation, Wilmington DE), varying the amount of C8-AGE-MPA used to prepare the aqueous phase. The characteristics of the formulations and products are listed in Table 1. The quality (particle size, stability) of the emulsion is improved when the resin content is increased above about 0.5% based on the total emulsion (or about 1.5% based on the dispersed phase).
[0077] Table 1: Total emulsion required for good stability based on HMPA content above about 0.5%

Embodiment 3
[0079] Example 3: Preparation of Stable Rosin Dispersions According to the Invention
[0080] Preparation of the adduct: 70 parts of fumaric acid having a solids content of 99% are reacted with 930 parts of tall oil rosin at elevated temperature. Fumaric acid dissolves in the molten rosin and reacts with it to form a reaction product. After substantially all of the fumaric acid has reacted with the gum rosin, the reaction product is cooled to room temperature (about 23°C). The product is a mixture comprising unmodified rosin and a rosin-fumaric acid reaction product or adduct. The reaction product contained 7% by weight of fumaric acid, which was substantially completely reacted.
[0081] Preparation of the emulsion: The oil phase was prepared by dissolving 145.78 parts of the adduct in 145.78 parts of dichloromethane. The aqueous phase was prepared by dissolving 23.99 parts of C8-AGE-MPA in 184.8 parts of water and adjusting the pH to 3.0 with 98% sulfuric acid. The aqueo...
