[0029] According to the teachings herein, an orientation tracking system can be provided that can measure the orientation of a movable target object in an absolute coordinate system after the motion is completed, eg incrementally tracked using a position encoder. If the absolute coordinate measurement system determines that the current orientation of a temporarily stationary target object deviates from the desired orientation by more than a configurable tolerance, the target object can be commanded to move towards the corrected orientation. Therefore, errors in relative coordinate measurements can be corrected using the absolute coordinate measurement process disclosed herein.
