MSSP was conceived as an upgrade to SDH / Sonet or OTH to allow transport of various types of Layer-2 clients: ATM, Fiber Channel, DVB, and Ethernet. Typically, Layer-2 (L2) and SDH / OTH functions are only loosely coupled. Conventional implementations provide some L2 functionality (performance monitoring, filtering, aggregation, bridging protocols...) to a slice (line card) with an Ethernet interface.
