System and method for bandwidth optimization in a network storage environment

ActiveUS20080243992A1Optimized network bandwidth utilizationResource can be very expensiveMultiple digital computer combinationsSpecial data processing applicationsClient-sideData store
According to one or more embodiments of the present invention, a network cache intercepts data requested by a client from a remote server interconnected with the cache through one or more wide area network (WAN) links (e.g., for Wide Area File Services, or “WAFS”). The network cache stores the data and sends the data to the client. The cache may then intercept a first write request for the data from the client to the remote server, and determine one or more portions of the data in the write request that changed from the data stored at the cache (e.g., according to one or more hashes created based on the data). The network cache then sends a second write request for only the changed portions of the data to the remote server.

Transparant non-disruptable ATM network

A method and apparatus for the transparent, non-disruptable transfer of data, particularly multimedia data, through any packet-based network, such as an ATM network is provided. The method of the present invention includes the step of setting a primary path and a secondary path between nodes of a network, or of a network domain. Accordingly, when a switch or node establishes a Virtual Path (VP) to another switch with specified effective bandwidth, it also has an alternate VP that is available, although no bandwidth is actually used. The method of the present invention further includes the step of optimizing the available capacity of the system through management actions. For handling congestion and resource failures, the total effective bandwidth on each physical link is categorized in terms of idle capacity (unused or available), used capacity (for existing VPs), and spare capacity. When a resource failure occurs, the idle capacity is used for real-time switching of the VP and service is not disrupted. This is accomplished by an alarm indication management cell which is delivered when a resource problem is encountered. This management cell sets forth the secondary path and the bandwidth associated therewith. On the other hand, if idle capacity does not exist, the spare capacity is used, while the bandwidth of all other VPs is reconfigured using virtual bandwidth optimization. Therefore, service disruption does not occur. In a wireless, mobile network, the present invention monitors node movement and takes management actions on the basis of such node movement to prevent service disruption.

Device and method for bandwidth optimization using a local cache

A device 60 for time-shifting a first signal set with respect to a second signal set, as compared to the time sequence in which they were received, includes a receiver 44B, 46B, a storage means 44C, 46C, 70, a central processing unit 66, and a user interface 72. The first signal set 38 bears a cache marker 34 that directs the CPU to store it in a local storage. The second signal set 40 bears a recall marker 36 that uniquely identifies the first signal set 38 through the cache marker 34, and that determines a sequence in which the first and second signal sets are to be output. The CPU uses the recall marker and cache marker to sequence the first and second signal sets relative to one another in time that differs from the timed relation in which they were received. By storing the first signal set in a local storage, it need be broadcast or transmitted only once, eliminating the need to re-broadcast recurring commercial advertisements and conserving bandwidth.

Systems and methods are provided to optimize bandwidth usage associated with a local network. As part of the bandwidth optimization techniques, an authentication entity may receive an indication of an access profile selected by a user of an electronic device. The authentication entity may assign the access profile to the electronic device. Accordingly, when the electronic device transmits data, a network regulation entity may process the traffic in accordance with the access profile. To this end, the network regulation entity may correspond communication sessions within the traffic to an application. The network regulation entity may then query the access profile to determine a priority for each application. When the traffic exceeds a threshold byte volume, the network regulation entity may queue lower priority communication sessions. By processing the traffic based upon a user-indicated access profile, compliance with network neutrality principles may be maintained.

Bandwidth optimization of ring topology through propagation delay compensation

In a ring topology digital network propagation delay is reduced A master node transmits a clock signal into the network in one direction. Each slave node propagates the signal to the next slave node without regeneration until the signal is received by the master node. The amount of time the signal takes to travel around the ring, is measured and is the total ring propagation delay. The master node then transmits a clock signal in both directions to the first slave node which measures the difference in their arrival times and transmits the difference to the master node. The process is repeated for each other slave node. Based upon each difference the master node computes the propagation delay for each ring segment. The master node transmits to each slave node the corresponding ring segment propagation delay and each slave node adjusts the phase of the node's clock.

Bandwidth allocation for video-on-demand networks

Methods for the optimal allocation of bandwidth among a plurality of video-on-demand (VOD) programs available on each link of a VOD tree network, where a server at the root node of the tree network broadcasts the multiple VOD programs. Each node in the network has demands for a subset of the programs and each link connecting nodes in the network has a limited amount of available bandwidth capacity. The available bandwidth is allocated on each link optimally among all programs that are carried on that link. The bandwidth allocated to a specific program may be different on different links of the network, as the bandwidth allocated may be decreased, but not increased, from one link to the next along the paths from the root node to the destination nodes. The methods use equitable resource allocation models with a lexicographic minimax objective function. The first method finds optimal solutions while satisfying the capacity constraints on all links, tree-like ordering constraints for the bandwidth allocated to each of the programs, and lower and upper bounds on bandwidth allocation for each program. The second method finds optimal solutions to a more restrictive scheme that imposes additional constraints which require equal bandwidth allocation for a specific program on all relevant links emanating from the same node.

Network bandwidth optimization by dynamic channel allocation

A method for increasing channel utilization in a video broadcast system includes receiving, at a head-end, a request for a video program from one of a plurality of subscriber stations. Determining whether the requested video program is associated with a first subset of channels representing broadcasted channels having a first subscriber viewership level greater than a threshold level, a second subset of channels representing broadcasted channels having a second subscriber viewership level less than the threshold level, and a third subset of channels representing on-demand channels having a third subscriber viewership. The first subset of broadcast channels is substantially continuously transmitted. The second subset of broadcast channels is transmitted based upon channel availability and programming assignments. Bandwidth optimization of video program bearing transport streams

A method and system are provided for remultiplexing program bearing data. The remultiplexing method and system are applicable to MPEG-2 compliant transport streams carrying video programs. A descriptor based system is used for scheduling the timely output of transport packets wherein each descriptor records a dispatch time as well as a receipt time for each transport packet. The receipt time is used for estimating program clock reference adjustments, but final program clock reference adjustment is performed in hardware in relation to the precise output timing of each transport packets. A descriptor and transport packet caching technique is used for decoupling the synchronous receipt and transmission of transport packets from any asynchronous processing performed thereon. The descriptors can also be used for managing scrambling and descrambling control words (encryption and decryption keys). Remultiplexing functions may be distributed across a network. The remultiplexer can furthermore optimize the bandwidth of transport streams by replacing null transport packets with transport packet data to be inserted into the output transport stream. Program data transmitted via asynchronous communication links is re-timed and assistance is provided for outputting program data on such asynchronous communication links to reduce a variation in end-to-end delay incurred by the program data. Remultiplexing and program specific information can be seamlessly dynamically varied without stopping, or introducing a discontinuity in, the flow of outputted transport packets. A technique is also provided for locking multiple internal reference clock generators.
