Virtual ports for data transferring of a data storage system

A storage controller has at least one physical data port for a data network including host processors. The storage controller is programmed to provide a plurality of virtual ports for access to storage, and a virtual switch for routing storage access requests from the physical port to the virtual ports. The virtual ports and the virtual switch are defined by software. The virtual ports appear to the hosts as physical ports in the data network. For example, in a Fiber-Channel network, the virtual ports have World Wide Names (WWNs) and are assigned temporary addresses (S_Ds), and the virtual switch provides a name server identifying the WWNs and S_IDs of the virtual ports. For convenient partitioning of storage among host processors, one or more virtual ports are assigned to each host, and a set of storage volumes are made accessible from each virtual port. A host can access storage at a virtual port only if the virtual port has been assigned to the host. Preferably, storage can be accessed through each virtual port by no more than one assigned host, although a shared volume may be accessible from more than one virtual port. The storage controller may provide a service for reporting to a host the virtual ports through which the host can access storage, and the storage volumes that are accessible to the host through each of the virtual ports.

Radio tag system and method with improved tag interference avoidance

A data transmission system includes a reader transceiver and one or more tag transceivers. The reader transmits an activation signal to a tag. The tag selectively transmits a response signal to the reader at a specific time determined by a detected level of communications channel activity. The detector operates in a low-power standby state until the time it receives the activation signal, and then operates in an active state. The invention further incorporates a technique to maintain an extremely low power state to the tag during quiescent mode while retaining full sensitivity to reader activation signals. The reader transceivers are of a modular architecture with each module operating independently, yet in concert with the others. The modules are interconnected in a media independent method and can interact remotely with other modules.

Method for authorizing in data transmission systems

The invention relates to a method and to a device for the authorization in data transmission systems employing a transaction authorization number (TAN) or a comparable password. According to a first step, the user sends a qualifying identification of the data input apparatus together with a request for the generation or for the selection of a transaction authorization number TAN or of comparable password from a data file from the data input apparatus to an authorization computer. In a second step the authorization computer generates the transaction authorization number TAN or the comparable password or selects them form a data file. According to a third step, the authorization computer sends the transaction authorization number TAN or the comparable password over a second transmission path different from the first transmission path to a monitor, for example a pager. According to a fourth step, the user reads this transaction authorization number TAN or the comparable password from the receiver and enters the transaction authorization number TAN or the comparable password into the data input apparatus. According to a fifth step, this transaction authorization number TAN or the comparable password is transmitted to the authorization computer. According to a sixth step, the authorization computer verifies the validity of the transaction authorization number TAN or of the comparable password in order to establish or switch free, according to a seventh step, a connection between the data input apparatus and the receiver unit.

Usage statistics collection for a cable data delivery system

Apparatus for recording and collecting usage and other statistical data from components of a cable data network comprises a network manager for maintaining and collecting the statistics. Internet protocol addresses are associated with components of the network. The component maintains a software agent that manages a statistics database. Responsive to a manager request generated at a service provider defined time interval, the component software agent provides the usage statistics to the network manager in real-time during an Internet session with a host. When the host to Internet or other data connection is torn down due to failure, disconnect or inactivity time-out, remaining usage statistics data is collected and the session duration updated with the time of tear down. Usage statistics collected include the amount of data transferred to / from a host, the amount of data that is discarded due to insufficient resource capacity and amount of data that cannot be corrected despite forward error correction used in a downstream high capacity channel to the host. Data traps may be defined and downloaded to components of the network for implementation. As a result, billing of users of the cable data network can be usage sensitive and determined based on actual data transferred (including credit given for errored data) and / or time sensitive based on session duration.

Data transfer system capable of converting file formats

In a data transfer system, when transferring data which has been transferred to a storage in a PC, to a mobile terminal connected to the PC, the PC acquires the file format of the data and the file format which can be processed by the mobile terminal and determines whether the conversion of the file format is necessary. When the conversion of the file format is necessary, the PC issues a request for a conversion to a format converter. The format converter acquires data from the PC and transfers the data back to the PC while performing conversion. The PC transfers the converted data to the mobile terminal.
