The laser beam has an appropriate wavelength for producing a laser-induced optical breakdown in the corneal tissue of the eye 12 . The laser beam 20 may have a wavelength in the range from 300nm (nanometers) to 1900nm, eg from 300nm to 650nm, from 650nm to 1050nm, from 1050nm to 1250nm or from 1100nm to 1900nm. The laser beam 20 can also have a focal diameter of 5 μm or less.
