The embodiment of the invention provides a fault detection method and apparatus for a rechargeable energy storage system (RESS). The fault detection method comprises the steps: acquiring a first voltage detection point at a total positive electrode of an RESS and a first voltage between vehicle bodies, and / or acquiring a second voltage detection point at a total negative electrode of the RESS and a second voltage between vehicle bodies; when the absolute value of the first voltage is the first integral multiple of the nominal voltage of a standard battery box, determining a connecting point between the first integer of standard battery box and the first integer +1 of standard battery box from the first voltage detection point to the total negative electrode of the RESS as a fault point; and when the second voltage is the second integral multiple of the nominal voltage of the standard battery box, determining a connecting point between the second integer of standard battery box and the second integer +1 of standard battery box from the second voltage detection point to the total positive electrode of the RESS as a fault point.
