[0017] This application provides methods for working between global and local registration. The present application provides for registration of brain structures represented by a set of articulated substructures. This takes into account anatomical and functional brain structures such as the hippocampus, thalamus, and braincase, which consist of a set of substructures. The shape, posture and strength of these substructures vary from brain to brain and even between different hemispheres of the same brain. Each brain structure is described by a rigid shape and its associated surface strength value, and it deforms like an articulated object. This articulation deformation describes a set of rotations about a contact point similar to a mechanical hinge. Each substructure can also be broken down into smaller subcomponents to make the registration as accurate as possible.
