Embodiment Construction

[0017] This application provides methods for working between global and local registration. The present application provides for registration of brain structures represented by a set of articulated substructures. This takes into account anatomical and functional brain structures such as the hippocampus, thalamus, and braincase, which consist of a set of substructures. The shape, posture and strength of these substructures vary from brain to brain and even between different hemispheres of the same brain. Each brain structure is described by a rigid shape and its associated surface strength value, and it deforms like an articulated object. This articulation deformation describes a set of rotations about a contact point similar to a mechanical hinge. Each substructure can also be broken down into smaller subcomponents to make the registration as accurate as possible.

Abstract

A registration processor (74) is configured to obtain articulated brain substructures using acquired brain image data and template brain image data. The registration processor (74) annotates the brain image data; registers the brain image data with template image data using global brain registration; and registers at least one brain structure of the brain image data a corresponding brain structure of the template image data using a local brain sub-structure registration. The registration processor (74) articulates articulated substructures of the registered brain structures to improve registration using articulated substructure registration.

Description

Background technique [0001] Alzheimer's disease, along with other types of dementia, is a symptom of physical decline that affects millions of people. Early detection of the onset of such symptoms can facilitate early intervention and improve patient health, quality of life, and overall outcomes. These symptoms are associated with atrophy of the hippocampal region of the brain. [0002] Registration of brain magnetic resonance (MR) volumes is a fundamental operation for processing brain information. This information is used in the diagnosis of brain tumors, brain development in children, stroke management, and neurodegenerative diseases. Registration of one brain (the target brain to be processed for diagnosis) to another brain (the template or atlas brain containing known information about its structure) allows the clinician to compare individual The shape and intensity information of the pixel. The identification and quantification of shape / intensity differences between ...
