The invention provides a multi-level frequency converter and a control method thereof. The control method comprises the steps of: providing a first carrier signal and a second carrier signal, wherein the first carrier signal and the second carrier signal have the same phase and each comprises N groups of in-phase laminated carrier signals, and N is greater than or equal to 2; providing a first control signal to a multi-level rectifying circuit according to the first carrier signal and a first modulation signal; and providing a second control signal to a multi-level inverting circuit according to the second carrier signal and a second modulation signal. According to the multi-level frequency converter and the control method thereof, the total common-mode voltage of a frequency converter system can be reduced through partial cancellation of common-mode voltages of the multi-level rectifying circuit and the multi-level inverting circuit, thereby reducing the adverse effect of the common-mode voltage of the frequency converter on a motor and a power grid, and reducing the cost and size of a common-mode filter.
