The viscosity modifier comprises 1 to 5 parts of a polymer monomer, 0.1 to 0.5 parts of a chain initiator, 0.1 to 0.5 parts of a chain terminating agent, 0.1 to 1 part of a catalyst, 0.1 to 0.8 parts of a preservative, 0.005 to 0.02 parts of an antifoaming agent, 0.01 to 0.05 parts of a colorant and 80 to 120 parts of the water. The molecular weight of the polymer monomer is less than 2000. The compatibility of the viscosity modifier and the polycarboxylic acid mother liquor is very good so that the viscosity modifier is easy to use, can realize the polycarboxylate mother liquor rapid dispersion and can ensure long-term stability. The viscosity modifier can improve cohesion of concrete, does not influence a water-reducing rate of an additive, slump retention and setting time and can effectively improve the later strength of concrete.
