Embodiment

[0048] The invention is further illustrated by the following examples, which list particularly advantageous embodiments. While the examples are provided to illustrate the invention, they are not intended to limit the invention.

[0049] Example

[0050] The TPU compositions listed in Table I were prepared in a twin-screw extruder in a continuous bulk polymerization process. The compositions prepared are summarized in Table I.

[0053]

[0054] Comparative examples C5 and C6 failed to form high molecular weight polymers, and the reaction products were macroscopically phase separated and unusable. As shown by a comparison of C5 and C6 with the inventive examples Ex.1-8, it can be seen that the use of hindered aromatic diamines enables the formation of thermoplastic, melt processable polyurethanes using a continuous bulk process in a reactive extruder - urea compositions. Similar compositions cannot be prepared using aliphatic diamines.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a melt processable thermoplastic polyurethane-urea composition formed by a continuous bulk process without the presence of solvent using a polyol component, an isocyanate component, and chain extender component comprising a hindered aromatic diamine.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present invention relates to melt processable thermoplastic polyurethane-urea elastomers, and more particularly to thermoplastic polyurethane-urea elastomers produced in a continuous manner, including elastomers produced in reactive extruders and / or similar equipment. [0002] Polyurea and / or copolyurea elastomers are usually derived from isocyanate and synthetic resin blend components by step growth polymerization. The resin blend components typically include amine terminated compounds. Methods for preparing copolyurea elastomers generally use prepolymer methods, since they cannot be accomplished in a continuous bulk polymerization process in a reactive extruder. Because amines react so rapidly with isocyanate groups, the reaction is difficult to control, and the reaction to make copolyurea elastomers is generally limited to the reaction injection molding (RIM) process. Even with sterically hindered amine chain extenders, the polymerization r...
