Embodiment Construction

[0056] refer to figure 1 , which shows a block diagram of a personal alarm system according to one embodiment of the present invention and is generally indicated by reference numeral 10 . The personal alarm system includes a remote control unit 12 and a base station 14 . The remote control unit 12 has a radio transmitter 16 and a receiver 18 and the base station 14 has a radio transmitter 20 and a receiver 22 . The transmitters 16 , 20 and receivers 18 , 22 are adapted for two-way radio communication between the remote control unit 12 and the base station 14 .

[0057] In a preferred embodiment, base station 14 includes an interval timer 24 which causes transmitter 20 to transmit at predetermined intervals. Receiver 18 of remote control unit 12 receives the signal transmitted by base station 14 and causes transmitter 16 to transmit a response signal to complete the electronic handshake.

[0058] The remote control unit transmitter 16 is capable of transmitting signals with ...

Abstract

The alarm system (300) includes a base station (318) that monitors remote control unit(s) (302) attached to the person or thing being monitored. A unit (302) includes a receiver (304) for receiving navigation information from global positioning system satellites (336). The signal of the location (338) is transmitted to the station (318) and displayed (324) to the system operator. An environmental or physiological sensor(s) (308) causes an output(s) (310) to switch on a transmitter (314) determining sensor status (344), which is displayed at the base station. An overboard sensor (308) is provided to the man overboard detection system (300). Optionally, the receiver (320) provides an output (334) that is inversely proportional to the distance separating the remote unit (302) and the base station (318), the Said separation distance and a limit (330) to activate the alarm (332) when the person has fallen into the water and drifted away. Navigational information is displayed (324) to aid in locating the man overboard.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to personal alarm systems, and in particular to such systems that transmit higher power level signals during emergency situations. Background technique [0002] Some personal alarm systems are well known in the art (see, for example, U.S. Patents US 4,777,478; US 5,025,247; US 5,115,223; and US5,086,391). These systems are used to keep children under surveillance. Use them to monitor the safety of employees involved in hazardous work at remote locations. Even use them to find lost or stolen vehicles and stray pets. [0003] These systems use radio technology to link a remote control transmitter unit with a base receiving and monitoring station. The remote control unit is usually equipped with one or more incident sensors and is worn or attached to the person or thing to be monitored. When an accident is detected, the remote unit transmits a signal to the receiving base station, and the operator at the base station can...
