Problems solved by technology

[0026] The use of formaldehyde or formaldehyde derivatives has several disadvantages such as degradation of cellulose fibers due to acid degradation of the catalyst which in turn causes the treated fabric or garment to lose strength

Embodiment

[0099] Durable Press Grade

[0100] Tested to compare via eg figure 2 Shown are the Durable Press (DP) ratings of six different fabrics produced by the process of the invention after three and five washes. Fabrics will vary in construction, weave, weight and color. Wash with Tide detergent on a regular cycle at 41°C, then dry on a 4-pound tumble-drying medium. Durable Press Rating tested according to AATCC-124.

[0102]

[0103]

[0104] As shown in Table 1, the durable press rating of each fabric remained at 3.5 after three washes and after five washes.

[0105] Formaldehyde content

[0106] A test was performed to compare the formaldehyde content of fabrics treated according to the present invention with the formaldehyde content of fabrics treated according to conventional liquid ammonia moisture curing methods. The fabrics are all 100% cotton.

Abstract

The invention relates to a method for finishing non-ironing fabrics and non-ironing fabrics prepared by the method. The method comprises the steps of mercerizing the fabric without liquid ammonia, curing the fabric by coating a low-temperature low-formaldehyde curing resin and dry crosslinking, and massaging the fabric with a blown fabric finisher. Non-ironing fabrics (and garments) produced according to this method have higher durable press ratings, lower or even no formaldehyde content than similar products finished according to conventional liquid ammonia moisture curing methods.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to non-ironing fabrics and garments and their finishing methods. These no-press fabrics and garments have a higher durable press rating and lower formaldehyde content than similar products manufactured using conventional methods, and are manufactured without the use of a liquid ammonia moisture cure treatment. In contrast, easy-care fabrics and garments are produced by mercerizing without liquid ammonia, dry crosslinking, and massaging the fabric with an air-blown fabric finisher. Background technique [0002] Textiles such as fabrics and garments as defined below develop undesirable creases and wrinkles that are worn and laundered. Especially for cellulose-based garments, wearing them can lead to noticeable creases and wrinkles, giving them an unsatisfactory appearance and finish. Consumers can attempt to remove unwanted creases and wrinkles by, for example, tumble drying, ironing, or pressing, but these methods are oft...
